Relevant History Impacting Inductions to Hall of Fame:

  • The Dalles High School has been varying OSAA competitive levels and leagues since 1887.

  • Prior to Title IX Federal legislation passed in June 1972, girls did not play school-sponsored sports.  Title IX was intended to target gender discrimination in schools.  It was not widely adopted in Oregon until the 1974 school year.

So with no further ado, here are your 2022 Hall of Fame Inductees:

*Marv Markman 1938 TDHS Football   Marv’s coach at TDHS took him to try-outs at UofO.  He was not selected but a few weeks later he walked in his house after school to find his Dad, TDHS Coach and OSU Football Coach drinking coffee.  He was offered a place on the Beaver team.  Oregon State Beaver beat UofO to win their position at the 1942 Rose Bowl.   Shortly after being selected for the Rose Bowl, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor.  The entire West Coast went on black out precautions.  The Pasadena, California Rose Bowl was canceled.  The team received an invite from Duke to play the Rose Bowl Game, on their home turf in N.Carolina.  Traveling by train, with several players recovering from recent hospitalizations from Influenza, the team traveled the Northern Route which went through the Gorge.   The OSU defeat of Duke was a major upset.  There is a book written (Fields of Battle: Pearl Harbor, the Rose Bowl, and the Boys Who Went to War by Brian Curtis) about the players and the lives that followed as many of them enlisted for WW2 the day after the game.  Marv was always grateful that football impacted his life, in ways a young farm boy from Wasco County could not have imagined for himself, including earning an engineering degree and an officer rank before serving in the South Pacific.

*John Lundell 1953 TDHS Basketball, Guard.  3 sport varsity athlete.  In his senior year, the basketball team had 27 wins, led by Coach Ted Sarpola. Lundell made the Oregon All-State Basketball 1st Team with an award for Top Score. He played Basketball at the University of Oregon.  After returning to The Dalles, he became the Mayor from 1977 to 1984.  He loved living in The Dalles and was a civic leader as well as a historian and author.

*Denny Peterson 1957 TDHS Baseball, Pitcher.  American Legion Championship & 7A1 Championship in 1955.   Received the Hayward Champion of Champions by the Oregon Sports Writers & Broadcasters Association in 1955.  Pitched for  UofO his freshman, sophomore,  (benched with sore shoulder junior year) & senior years. Threw 27 consecutive shutout innings; signed to NY Mets, played one year for their minor league team the Santa Barbara Rancheros.  A shoulder injury ended his career.  He returned to TDHS as a teacher & coach.   As a coach, his 1966 Baseball team won the 7A2 Championship.

*Edwin Anghilante 1960 TDHS Track.  He was a 3-sport Varsity athlete.  Track:  In his junior year, he set the district record for low hurdles, which he broke again his Senior year.  He was coached by fellow inductee, Coach Al Miller.  His Senior year at TDHS, he competed against Mel Renfro at State meet in hurdles.  Later they would be teammates at the U of O.  He was also on the 1962 U of O Hall of Fame team NCAA Champions.  He was coached by Bill Bowerman of Nike fame & Les Casanova.

Al Miller TDHS Cross Country & Track/Field Coach:  mid 50’s - 2002.  He was a coach for over 45 years.  He coached 2 generations of athletes for TD.  The Dalles High School record board & OSAA Championships for both Cross Country and Track/Field are covered with the legacy of his career.  He was a mentor to other coaches including Bob Thouvenal.  He coached during the implementation of Title 9 that allowed girls to participate in sports.

Donita Huskey Wilson 1973 WHS Basketball.  3 sport Varsity Athlete .  Volleyball, Basketball & Track.  She was one of the first to play in high school sports after the implementation of Title 9.  We had a hard time researching her statistics, records & awards in high school.  She reminded me that “they were just grateful to play”, that the records, awards and acknowledgements were still not equal to the boys.  She went on to play Basketball at Eastern Oregon University & was inducted in their hall of fame for all-time high score.

Jeff Wood 1976 TDHS Football. Receiver. 3 sport varsity athlete.  Football, Basketball, Track.   Oregon High School ‘76 Shriner Game, 1st time on astroturf, he broke his helmet during that game.  U of O receiver, primarily.  4 seasons with coach Rich Brooks.  He received the Sahlstrom Award & Scholar Athlete Award in 1979 at U of O.  He was signed to Recruit Camp for the New Orleans Saints.
