The Dalles High School Drama Department presents, The Radio Play Disaster by Don Zolidis, starring TDHS senior Avery Winwood as Trixie Flanders and Asher Young as Harlan Bean.

The Dalles High School Drama Department put on a production for an empty theater at the Granada last Wednesday and Thursday due to COVID-19. However the “The Radio Play Disaster” will be available to watch online at Broadway On Demand on November 13th, 14th, 19th, 20th, 21st at 7:00 PM ONLY. Tickets are $6.00 for all ages. To order yours follow the link. Proceeds from the play will go to funding future high school drama productions.

The play itself is a comedic look at a “War of the World’s” radio play gone wrong...or maybe right? The play’s bio reads, “Self-proclaimed genius Harlan Bean is ready to make history with his science - fiction radio masterpiece. Battle of the Planets. But when the broadcast is in the hands of an ambitious actress with her own vision for her character, several terrified last-minute replacements jumping in, and a disgruntled sound engineer out for revenge, the mayhem in the studio makes an alien invasion look like a piece of cake.”

The production is performed by TDHS students, directed by Lowry Browning, and filmed by Robbie Denning at Immense Imagery. Students wear face masks during the play but thanks to some pre-planning and post-production processes this play is setting the stage to be a local hit.

Avery Winwood, who portrays the character, Trixie Flanders said “my favorite part is when my character starts messing with the sound effects to get some revenge against the director, Harlan. Overall it was fun to do live sound effects, as well as get to mess around with my friend Asher who plays Harlan.”

Winwood also expressed that there were some new difficulties due to COVID-19 restrictions, stating, “one of the most challenging things was acting with a face mask on. So much of acting on stage is using facial expressions to show how your character is feeling, and the mask takes that away…”

While this year’s high school production looks different than in previous years, students were glad to still have the opportunity to perform for the community. Get your tickets to watch “The Radio Play Disaster” now.

“In the end, I’m really grateful we were able to get together and do this. It was fun to see my friends and still get to have a theater experience as a senior,” said Winwood.

Performed animatedly by TDHS students, directed with vision by Lowry Browning, and book ended beautifully by audio samples from the original “War of the Worlds” that play during the opening and closing credits, the play has been filmed in black and white, with well-timed laugh tracks that add a nice touch, giving viewers a theatre experience in their own home.
