Lady Hawks Varsity Soccer Play to 1-1 Draw in Home Opener

August 31 - The Lady Riverhawks hosted Riverside High School yesterday, Aug. 30, at Wahtonka in their home varsity opener of the 2021 season. The game was dominated by multiple scoring opportunities on both sides, with Riverside successfully converting their only goal of the game in the second half, and with roughly ten minutes to play, sophomore Amyrah Hill brought the home crowd to their feet with an aggressive shot that scooted well past the Riverside goalie to notch the match at 1 apiece.

Hill and the Riverhawks had multiple chances, as they turned up the defensive heat going down the stretch, producing multiple shots on goal, but the Lady Pirates’ goalie was having none of it. A handful of opportunities left The Dalles thinking victory, but the Lady Hawks couldn’t push anything through for a winning score. The game ended in a 1-1 tie, leaving each squad with a 0-0-1 mark to open the 2021 season.

The Dalles Girls’ varsity and junior varsity soccer teams return to action on September 7th at 4:15 p.m. at Scappoose High School.

Riverhawks Cross Country Kick Off Season with Successful Fundraising Event

The Dalles Riverhawks Cross Country team kicked off their 2021 season at Sorosis Park this past Saturday by hosting their annual Run/Walk Fundraiser. According to head coach Jill Pearson, about two-thirds of the Riverhawks’ squad participated in the event. Several members of the community came out and participated, including a middle school team from North Lake School District in Oregon, on what turned out to be a beautiful Saturday morning in The Dalles.

Pacing the Riverhawk boys, was junior Juan Diego Contreras, who posted a 17:10.2 in the 5000-meter course, while senior Caitie Wring finished with a 25:15.93 for the girls. The Riverhawks continue their season by traveling to Tillamook this coming Friday where they will compete at the “Ultimook Race” at Hydrangea Ranch.
