The Dalles, Ore., June 11, 2024 — Northern Wasco County Parks and Recreation is growing its team to enhance local activities and sports for the community.

North Wasco County Parks & Rec. Executive Director Scott Baker

“I have the best job in The Dalles,” said Executive Director Scott Baker. “I work with awesome people who wake up every day with the goal of making The Dalles an awesome place to live.”

That attitude comes with benefits such as paid holiday, sick time, vacation, and PERS retirement. “Not all part-time jobs offer that,” Baker said.

Youth Sports Coordinator: 25 hours per week/ “The idea is supporting existing youth sports groups in our area,” said Assistant Director Todd Wheeler. “Like training on concussions that will make a safer environment for youth.”

The coordinator will work with local youth organizers to set up trainings - things as simple as teaching new parent coaches the rules of soccer and providing practice tips.

Excellent social and organizational skills are needed as this coordinator will network with different youth sports leaders in football, soccer, baseball, softball and basketball and more.

“The Dalles is really unique,” Wheeler said. “Youth sports happen through local nonprofit organizations like The Dalles Little League, The Dalles Youth Football or Gorge Soccer. This position will support those organizations.”

Assistant Director Todd Wheeler.

Rec. & Community Education Leader: This leader will network with and organize locals who want to teach a recreation or activities for example, beekeeping, brewing beer, book clubs, or an activity just becoming popular. The leader will assist the teacher with finding space, advertising the class and procuring insurance.

“In my younger years I did a lot of bike maintenance,” Wheeler said, providing an example of a class that could be taught. . “I trained people on how to maintain their derailers, brakes and cables on a bike, for instance.”

Is The Dalles ready for a Skate Park competition? A special event coordinator could find themselves answering that question.

Special Event Coordinator: This person would be in charge of organizing special events for the District. For example, maybe there is enough interest to hold a weekly rollerskate night at The Dalles Readiness Center, or perhaps a Skate Park competition.

Webmaster: 5 hours per week. This person would update the website with new content about parks such as new facilities, closures, upgrades and community events.
