The Dalles Beautification Committee Tree Grant

The Dalles Beautification Committee Tree Grant

From The Dalles Beautification Committee:

By Chuck Gomez

The Dalles, Ore. Oct. 14, 2024 — Saturday, Oct 12th at The Dalles, Thompson Park, The City's Beautification Committee distributed over 50 trees to all who had previously applied for the Tree Grant Give-Away.

Committee members, Debi Ferrer, John Watson, Chuck Gomez, Angel Drinkwine, and chair, Janet Kavanagh, were on hand for the check-ins, planting demonstration, and distribution of the 50+ ten-year-old and older trees.  "These are strong, healthy, and very mature trees and the committee is very pleased with the success and citizen turnout for the Tree Grant Program.

Next year we hope to double or maybe even triple the give-away numbers", Gomez said.  The planting demonstration was assisted by Scott Baker, executive director of Northern Wasco County Parks and Recreation as a beautiful Maple was donated and planted at the park.

Trees ranging from Hawthorns to Maples, Dogwoods, and even Gomez's favorite Lindens, were available.  A list of over a dozen suggested indigenous and other trees that would do well in our planting zone, were listed on the applications at the announcement of the tree grant program.

The Beautification Committee looks toward 2025 for increased citizen and committee joint projects such as this Tree Grant Program and is now working on a sidewalk beautification grant 2025, for downtown businesses with plans of making The Dalles downtown even more attractive to local folks and tourists alike.
