Night Farmers play Zim’s on Saturday. But what about that name?

Night Farmers play Zim’s on Saturday. But what about that name?

By Jim Drake

Night Farmers at Zim’s Aug. 21

I believe my friend who plays drums for the Night Farmers told me how the band The Night Farmers came up with the band name. But the information is so buried under so many other facts and rumors that I can’t remember the exact story. Probably due to all members, at least at one time, anyway, were involved with the agriculture business - and quite possibly - most activities occurred at night. Expect country and Americana style tunes geared for dancing. Zim’s in The Dalles, Saturday, Aug. 21, 7-9 p.m.

Countrified band at County Fairs

Countrified takes a trifecta on Fair Circuit.

Countrified takes a trifecta on Fair Circuit.

Kudos to Countrified for securing gigs at three area fairs this week:

Klickitat County Fair & NPRA Rodeo - Aug. 18-22. Live music from Countrified on Friday. Free admission Thurs-Fri; $5 Sat-Sun.

Sherman County Fair - Aug. 17-22. Live Music, featuring Countrified, on Saturday, 9:30 p.m.

Wasco County Fair - Aug. 19-22. My research says the Smock Dogs are playing on Friday, Aug. 20, and The Rock Doctors are playing Saturday, Aug. 21. Music happens after the Rodeo.

Metallica helps local college programs

Metallica pulling some long straws for locals.

Metallica pulling some long straws for locals.

Let’s be clear: we’re not talking about AC/DC, or Judas Priest, nor are we talking about Ozzy. We’re talking “Metallica.”  And who’s to say that good things never come from Hard Rock Bands? It seems that our local Columbia Gorge Community College has been Rocked by the heavy metal supergroup (10 albums, 9 Grammy’s) by procuring a grant from the band’s All Within My Hands Foundation. And it’s a fairly large sum: $100,000. Tuition scholarships are available for various technical programs, including “Electro-Mechanical Technology,” which definitely sounds like a “Metallica” topic. But seriously, to enroll and apply you need to do so by Sept. 27. Contact the college for more details. And please try to keep the volume down, we’re trying to study here!
