The Dalles, Ore., March 5, 2026 — Two outstanding seniors from The Dalles High School, Everest Lenardson and Aiden Nunez, were surprised this morning with one of the most prestigious academic honors offered by Oregon State University.
Sarah Harvey from Oregon State University visited The Dalles High School to personally present the OSU Presidential Scholarship to both students during a special on-campus announcement. The students were unaware they were receiving the scholarship, making the presentation a memorable surprise.
The Presidential Scholarship is Oregon State University’s most prestigious and competitive scholarship. Students are evaluated through a holistic review of their admission application, with specific attention to their accomplishments, contributions, experiences, and talents; their achievements within the context of their social and personal circumstances; and their participation in activities that demonstrate academic potential, leadership abilities, and a commitment to service.
Lenardson and Nunez each maintain GPAs above 3.9, with even higher weighted GPAs due to their rigorous coursework. Both students have also demonstrated strong involvement in extracurricular activities and community service, helping distinguish them among a highly competitive pool of applicants.
This year marks the first time the Presidential Scholarship can be stacked with the Finley Academic Excellence Award, increasing the total potential value of the award to $15,000 per year for each student and is renewable for up to three additional years, for a total of four years of funding.
Only 145 students Statewide — roughly 4% of applicants — received the Presidential Scholarship this year, and The Dalles High School is the only school in Eastern Oregon with two recipients.
Lenardson plans to study mechanical engineering, while Nunez plans to pursue electrical engineering at Oregon State University. The two students share a long history together, having been classmates since first grade and both previously attending St. Mary’s Academy before coming to The Dalles High School.
Their achievements reflect years of academic dedication and strong community involvement, making the recognition a proud moment for their families, school, and the greater Columbia Gorge community.
