Wasco County adds a Permanent free Mattress Recycling Drop Site

The Dalles, Ore., June 10, 2026 — Residents of The Dalles and Wasco County have a new, permanent drop-off location for recycling their unwanted mattresses and box springs at no charge.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP) thrift store at 505 W 9th St. in The Dalles has joined a growing statewide network of mattress recycling collection sites. The store accepts mattresses and box springs for recycling seven days a week, 10 am to 6 pm.

The industry-led mattress recycling program began mattress collection last year in Oregon. It replicates the Mattress Recycling Council’s (MRC) successful Bye Bye Mattress programs in other states. The SVDP thrift store in The Dalles is the first permanent site in Wasco County to join the program.

“St. Vincent de Paul established one of the first mattress recycling facilities in the U.S. Today, they are an important part of our growing statewide network of public collection sites,” said Mike O’Donnell, MRC’s Chief Operating Officer.

If a discarded mattress cannot be reused, SVdP will recycle it. Reusing or recycling mattress components to make new products conserves natural resources. The foam, steel, fiber, and wood are incorporated into new steel products, carpet padding, insulation, biomass fuel, and other products.

“For decades, SVdP has prioritized mattress recycling to advance our environmental stewardship goals. Oregon's statewide mattress recycling program expands our capacity to divert thousands of mattresses and boxsprings from landfills across our community – transforming landfill-bound material into new, sustainable products. We are proud to offer no-cost mattress recycling services in the Dalles and look forward to continuing to serve Oregonians in the coming years,” said Bethany Cartledge, Executive Director of St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County.

Oregon’s Mattress Stewardship Act enacted in 2022 established the Bye Bye Mattress program, and collection began Jan. 1, 2025. The program is funded through a $22.50 fee that is collected when a mattress or box spring is purchased in Oregon. The fee is used to establish free drop-off locations and collection events throughout the state, transport collected units to recyclers that dismantle the discarded products and prepare the materials for use in other products. When buying a new mattress, consumers should ask their retailer to recycle their old one.
