The Dalles, Ore., July 15, 2026 — The Wasco County Board of Commissioners today voted to appoint Rodger Nichols to fill the vacancy created by the passing of Commissioner Phil Brady. Nichols will serve the remainder of the current term, which concludes in January 2027.
Board Acts to Ensure Continuity of County Government
Following the unexpected passing of Commissioner Phil Brady on May 19, 2026, the Board carefully evaluated options for maintaining full representation and continuity in county governance. The Board remains grateful for Commissioner Brady's dedicated service to Wasco County and the community.
After careful consideration, the Board determined that appointing a commissioner to fill the vacancy was the best way to ensure the continued effective operation of county government and representation of county residents.
"We cannot replace Phil," said Commission Chair Scott Hege. "But Rodger brings a deep understanding of county government, longstanding service to our community, and a willingness to step into this role immediately. We appreciate his willingness to serve Wasco County during this transition."
Qualifications
The Board cited several factors in selecting Nichols:
Through his years covering county government as a local journalist, Nichols developed extensive familiarity with Board of Commissioners meetings, county programs, budgets and current issues.
Nichols currently serves as Wasco County's appointed representative on the Columbia River Gorge Commission and has a longstanding record of public service in the region.
Nichols stated that he will not conduct a write-in campaign for the position, allowing voters to determine the next commissioner through the regular election process.
Nichols expressed his commitment to serving the public and helping ensure continuity of county operations through the remainder of the term.
Nichols Accepts Appointment
Accepting the appointment, Nichols emphasized both his respect for Brady's legacy and his desire to serve the county during the transition.
"I would be honored, and I would try to do everything that Phil would want me to do," Nichols told the Board.
Nichols also reflected on his longtime friendship with Brady.
"He came to me when I was working at the radio station and got books for the library, and that's when I first met him at the prison library, and I was impressed with him there. I'm still impressed with him."
While acknowledging there will be a learning curve, Nichols said he is prepared to serve.
"I know nothing about this job right now," he said, before committing to travel throughout Wasco County and meet with residents. "I am. I'll commit to that."
Nichols also made clear that he does not intend to seek the office after his appointment.
"It's going to be short-lived. And I guarantee you I am not running any kind of campaign. I did this before, and I got my butt whipped, so I learned."
