Author Talk at Hood River County Library

An Author Talk featuring Robert J. Shano, will talk about his new book “Never Too Old for War,” Saturday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m., in the Hood River Library Reading Room.

About the Event

“Never Too Old For War” tells the incredible true story about an old Army foot soldier named Bob Shano, a Vietnam-era veteran and a native-born New Yorker from the Bronx, who was compelled by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to return to the ranks. But what makes this book so unique is that Shano had previously served in the Army as an Infantryman, left the military back in 1986 and, after being out of the service for 16 years, signed back up when he was 50 years old to serve alongside a new generation of Infantry soldiers, ultimately completing three combat tours — two in Iraq and one in Afghanistan — before being mandatorily retired in June 2013 at age 62. Over the course of his eleven-year enlistment, Shano braved bullets, roadside bombs, rocket and mortar attacks, and some of the harshest environmental conditions on the planet as he served alongside his fellow Infantrymen — most of whom were 30 years younger than he was. The author talk will be followed by a book signing and drawing for a free copy of the book.

Hillstomp **Ticketed Show**

Friday, Aug. 23, Doors at 5:30 p.m.

Portland junkbox blues duo HILLSTOMP is infamous for digging through the dumps and forgotten backwoods of American music, recycling traditional elements into a refreshing and distinctive brand of do-it-yourself hill country blues stomp. North Mississippi trance blues, a bit of Appalachia, and a dash of punkabilly come clanging and tumbling from assorted buckets, cans and BBQ lids, all drenched in rambunctious slide guitar. Somehow it works.

Despite their homemade instruments and novel approach, Hillstomp is no novelty act.

Thursday, Aug. 29, 6 p.m.

Portland-based Far Out West strikes a relentlessly engaging balance between funk-infused rock and a jazz-informed collaboration, making them stand out as one of Portland’s most creative electric quartets to groove their way across the West Coast in recent years. Since the band’s inception in 2016, their high energy performances and upbeat instrumentation continue to raise the spirits of their audiences, one sensational beat at a time.

LASKA / Unseen Object / Pale Violet, Portland Indie Rock Band Extravaganza, Friday, Aug. 16, FREE, 6 p.m. Doors / 7 p.m. Show, All Ages

Laska

LASKA

The songwriters in question are Hannah and Mookie Morton. The work in question takes a little more juice. Sometimes their music presents as harmonies and melodies placing themselves on ears and hearts like the careful legs of a balletic spider, in awe of its own symmetry and progress. Sometimes their work arrives as an overdue outpouring. Starting somewhere in the body - ecstatic as the seed of a pure and wordless truth - and then erupting as a cathartic yawp. Bonded by blood, forged in psychic battle, sisters Hannah and Mookie channel their lived experiences into music that glides through genres like a canoe on a quiet lake. Stage tested and bad to the bone. LASKA is the sound you hear when you're inside of an indelible memory.

UNSEEN OBJECT

Unseen Object is a rock band from Portland, OR. The project was founded in 2022 and is fronted by human multi-instrumentalists David Alvarado and Kai Nealis. Dylan Bodnarick and Malen Cuturic complete their poignant sound. They do it for love of the game and with a faith in "all good things come to those that stay true". They are all music lifers who care more about stretching to make some musical meaning out of the air than about most other things. They are finishing their first album.

PALE VIOLET

Pale Violet is led by powerhouse social worker and songwriter Mahalia-Lind Diamond. Drummer Kai Nealis, guitarist/ synthesist Jordan Porto, and bassist Dylan Bodnarick round out the band, which took shape after much time spent discussing vulnerability and art. Pale Violet is rooted in the desire to explore and share in the intimacy that songwriting requires. Their lyrics reflect on love, tenderness, grief, depression and uncertainty. They channel music to process feelings that are complex, and often discomforting. Just like therapy.
