The Dalles, Ore., Aug. 4, 2025 A local woman escaped a house fire on East 12th Street in The Dalles, just beyond the Quentin Street ballpark, around 6 p.m. Monday.

Witnesses said the resident at 2008 E. 12th Street was able to exit the home without injury before Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue arrived.

Firefighters used several water hoses to battle the blaze, and a chainsaw was used to cut a hole in the roof to access flames that had spread into the attic space.

Firefighters could be seen on the roof cutting it open, while a second firefighter used a crowbar-like tool called a Halligan bar to pry through the roof.

Three engines and multiple trucks responded to the scene, and roads east and west of the fire were barricaded during the response.

Dozens of nearby residents watched as thick plumes of black smoke rose from the house. The smoke turned white as firefighters doused the blaze with water. Crews attacked the fire from the rear of the house and from the east side, where they gained entry through a broken window.

The fire undoubtedly caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage, but no official estimate was available at the time of publication. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
