The Dalles, OR, Aug. 11, 2025 — Major renovations are underway at the former Staples building in The Dalles, intensifying speculation about its next tenant. While local rumors continue to spread that the site will beome a TJ Maxx store, company officials remain hush-hush.
“Thank you for reaching out.” said Madeleine Peters of TJX this afternoon in response to a CCCNews email. TJX is the parent company to TJ Maxx. “Although we appreciate your inquiry, TJ Maxx has not announced a new store for The Dalles, OR at this time.”
Renovation crews worked on removing materials from the former Staples building this afternoon, Aug. 11.
For months, local developer Darren Dickerhoof has been coy on the identity of the incoming tenant—only confirming it was a "national clothing chain" that would revamp the facade and reconfigure the former office‑supply box for a fresh retail identity.
CCCNews has left messages with both Dickerhoof and will report back when new information is gained.
But it cannot be debated that major renovation work is taking place at the former Staples building as much concrete and metal have been removed from the building in the past several days.
A pile of concrete sits in the north side of the former Staples store.
The building at 460 Mount Hood Street, formerly home to Staples, is owned by Riviera Enterprises LLC and managed by Dickerhoof Properties, both based in Corvallis. Darren Dickerhoof said earlier this year that the location’s visibility and proximity to Safeway make it an attractive draw for a national retailer, noting that The Dalles serves as the primary shopping destination for much of the Mid-Columbia.
“When we get a lease signed, we will be able to make it public information,” Dickerhoof said in March, before adding that the incoming retailer planned to be operating in time for the holiday shopping season. “We will redo the facade and work on the interior of the building. It will be awesome for the town. We’ll be building on the front of Staples to give it its own identity that will make it look nicer.”
