On Saturday, June 11th, the Portland Chamber Orchestra (PCO) will bring their world premiere of “Celilo Falls: We Were There” to The Granada Theatre located in downtown The Dalles, OR.
The show has been composed by celebrated Oregon-based composer Nancy Ives and features poetry by Ed Edmo. Ed is a Shoshone-Bannock poet, playwright, performer, traditional storyteller, tour guide and lecturer on Northwest tribal culture. He also offers guided tours to the She Who Watches petroglyphs on the Columbia Gorge, as well as to the Warm Springs Indian Reservation in central Oregon's high desert country.
The show also features projected photographic images by Cherokee artist Joe Cantrell. “This important large-scale work for chamber orchestra portrays the experience of the Native Americans who lost not only their livelihoods but their cultural home for millennia when the Dalles Dam flooded the Falls in 1957,” read a PCO press release.
The PCO called the show “A sonic and visual tapestry of evocative music, personal recollections, and immersive imagery, this monumental new piece conveys Native peoples’ depth of presence in this land and the universal power of place.”
