Obituary: Wanda Faye Hilderbrand, 102, Sherman County

Submitted by Jeff Hilderbrand

Wanda Hilderbrand, born in La Grande, Oregon on January 20, 1924 to Grant and Maude Tucker, passed away on January 26.  The youngest of four children, (Bert, Gayle, and Barbara) she grew up in Imbler. Wife to John Hilderbrand and Mother to Ormand (Christy), Jill Burlison (Barry, deceased), and Jeff (Jo). Grandmother to Wade Hilderbrand (Christie), Jesse Hilderbrand, Carla Hilderbrand (Sara), Katy Krueger (Jarrad), step-grandmother to Katie Dobbins (Denver), Crystal Rattler (Leo), and Great Grandmother to seven.  Mom also had a special relationship with her niece Marlene Wallace who was more of a sister than a niece.

Graduating from Nursing School in The Dalles General Hospital, 1946.  Mom continued to work at The Dalles General Hospital part time and full time after graduation through the mid-1970’s, making many lifelong friends with staff and patients alike.

Mom and Dad married in 1950 and they moved to the Hilderbrand family ranch east of Wasco where Dad and his brother Gordon farmed together.

Mom truly loved Sherman County and her “Wine Pals”, Trina Gray, Forrest Peters, Debbie Brown, and of course Marlene. (I hope I didn’t miss anyone!)

Growing up with Mom, our friends were always welcome at the home.  We could ask anyone we wanted to join us for dinner or even to go snow and water skiing; there was always room for one or two more.  We never had to ask if it was ok.

Mom, we loved your feisty nature. Your presence will be missed by your family and many others, but you’ll aways be in our hearts.

Memorial service will be on February 7 from 1:00-4:00 at the Wasco Event Center (the old grade school).

We would like to thank the staff at The Springs at Mill Creek in The Dalles, and Columba Basin Nursing for the care she was given in her final months.
