The family of Ron & Dewanda Clark would like to invite you to attend a celebration of life service in their honor. Dewanda served The Dalles community for over 68 years as a volunteer in city, regional and national positions and her life’s work was improving the lives of others. Ron was born and raised in The Dalles and returned after college to become a partner in a CPA firm and volunteer his financial prowess for several organizations.
Nothing gave them more joy than being a part of this community and enjoying all the friendships they made over the years. A luncheon, slide presentation and time to share your favorite stories about them will follow the church ceremony in Tayler Hall. They both loved the flowers that spring brings, so please wear bright colors to contribute to the celebration. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship has been established in their memory that will allow TDHS graduates to further their career aspirations. The family will take great comfort in connecting with all that attend.

Obituary: Jim Eastman, 81, Hood River
Obituary: Jim Eastman, 81, Hood River
Jim Eastman
Jim Eastman, age 81, passed away on May 2nd, 2023, screaming and dragging his heels.
Jim was born December 8, 1941, to Moose and Iola Eastman. He grew up in Hood River, attending Oak Grove Elementary and Mid Valley Middle Schools and by the grace of God graduated from Wy’East High School in 1960.
During his middle school and high school years, he worked on a number of different tasks including spraying fruit trees with a long hose and nozzle, thinning and picking fruit and yarding out thousands of “boxes” of fruit.
After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps for a four-year contract. Twenty-three years later, Jim retired having had a very interesting career. Over these years he held 8 of the 9 enlisted ranks, was commissioned to 2nd Lieutenant, and retired as a Captain, having also held the rank of Warrant Officer.
On November 5, 1963, he married his wife of 59 years, Barbara Shute, a lifelong resident of Odell, in the Little Chapel of the Bells in Las Vegas, Nevada. For some reason she put up with the life in the Marine Corps, living in some of the most exotic places in the US: California, Tennessee, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Hawaii. They were blessed with the love of their lives when their daughter Jennifer was born in 1969 in Knoxville. The family returned to Hood River to live and work each of the three times Jim was deployed overseas.
Within a few days of retirement, Jim went to work for Custom Aluminum but not long after that was hired by the Hood River County School District to manage the Transportation Department, and contrary to popular belief his title was Supervisor and not Dictator. He was extremely proud of the school bus drivers and the maintenance department which he also ran with an iron fist. Their dedication, loyalty and motivation earned them a reputation as being some of the best (if not the best) in the state.
After a little over 19 years he retired from the school district and went to work for CMWO Sheppards. He had a hard time holding a job and after 10 years there he left to spend his time driving his wife crazy.
He was preceded in death by his parents Moose and Iola Eastman, his brother Bill Eastman, and his sister Judy Beam. He is survived by his Barbara (“Barney”), daughter Jennifer, son-in-law Jason, and brother Gary Eastman and his wife Kim.
A funeral service and reception for Jim will be held at 11:00 A.M on May 12th, 2023 at Andersons Tribute Center (1401 Belmont Ave, Hood River, OR 97031)
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Meals on Wheels and/or FISH (in care of Anderson’s Funeral Home).

Obituary: Kenneth (Ken) Duane Shattuck, Goldendale
Obituary: Kenneth (Ken) Duane Shattuck, Goldendale
Kenneth (Ken) Duane Shattuck
Kenneth (Ken) Duane Shattuck passed away at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver, Washington on April 20, 2023, from heart failure.
He was born the middle child of H.P. and Jean (White) Shattuck in The Dalles, Oregon on January 6, 1945. His older brother Joe, and later younger brother Nolan rounded out the Shattuck family that called Roosevelt, Washington home. He attended school in Roosevelt until the family moved to Goldendale, Washington in 1955 where he finished his schooling. He was always known to say he was “a one county boomer” as he never moved from the county of his childhood.
On March 16, 1963 he married Karen Gibson and they enjoyed 60 years of marriage together, including raising two children: Darren and Kim. The couple first met when Ken, at age 10, moved into the neighborhood where Karen lived in Goldendale. They shared many childhood memories of playing hide and seek, kick the can, and annie annie over as well as going to movies with the neighborhood group. Here’s a funny story: every weekend while dating they went to the movies. After they married, Karen suggested they should see a movie that was playing. His response was, “I hate movies.”
Who knew!
Ken worked in construction until 1968 when Klickitat PUD hired him as a lineman. The apprenticeship consisted of courses through Columbia Basin Community College which he attended on weekends. The next 30 years were spent working for Klickitat PUD, retiring in 1998 with a full retirement. Afterward, to stay busy, he spent five years as greenskeeper and superintendent of the Goldendale Golf Club.
He had many hobbies over the years, but fishing was always a part of his life. He had planned to go salmon fishing with his son Darren during the spring Chinook run this May, an annual tradition. Another trip was planned to Chinook, Washington to again, to salmon fish at the mouth of the Columbia River, and the Pacific Ocean. He also enjoyed golf; meeting his buddies on men’s day on Thursdays. Camping and traveling were enjoyed by the whole family with international trips to Canada, Mexico, and Jamaica and domestic trips stateside to Hawaii, and many other states.
He was a member of Jaycees, the Goldendale Golf Club, and The American Legion #116. He had served as president of both the Jaycees and the golf club.
In Ken’s younger years, he enjoyed bareback riding, motorbike riding, scuba diving, and hunting, but later it was fishing and golf.
He was preceded in death by his parents H.P. (Toppy) Shattuck, stepmother Mary Lou (Charlie) Shattuck, mother Jean Miller, and brother Nolan Shattuck.
He is survived by his wife Karen Shattuck, son Darren Shattuck (Tiffany Osborne), daughter Kim Walton (Richard), grandchildren Kaylon Drury (John), Sadie Shattuck, Nicholle Eshelman (Thomas), and Dillon Shattuck, and four great-grandsons Jay, Rhett, Trey, and Brooks, with a new great-grandson, expected this September.
There will be a celebration of life on June 24, 2023, at 1:00 PM at the American Legion in Goldendale with food provided by the American Legion Auxiliary.

Obituary: Zachory “Zach” Jerry Evans Eaton, 34, Hood River
Obituary: Zachory “Zach” Jerry Evans Eaton, 34, Hood River
Zachory “Zach” Jerry Evans Eaton
Zachory “Zach” Jerry Evans Eaton, 34, passed away at home in Hood River, Oregon on April 23, 2023, surrounded by his wife, family, and friends.
Zach was born on November 24, 1988, in Kennewick, Washington, where he first developed a deep love for athletics and the outdoors. As he grew up, he channeled that love into kiteboarding, competitive skiing, and cycling, joining the Hood River Valley High School Ski Team and competing in various events for the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association.
He graduated from Hood River Valley High School in 2007 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps shortly thereafter. He served from 2007 until 2012, including one tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2010. He proudly served his country and was deeply loved by his squadron and fellow Marines.
While still in high school, Zach met his wife, Kara. They married in Hood River in 2011 and are the parents of two beautiful children, Russell and Ella. Zach’s love of nature and the outdoors meant he spent much of his time going on walks, hikes, and adventures around the Pacific Northwest with his family.
After his military service in 2012, Zach began a career working at Boeing as an assembler of commercial airplanes, and most recently as an Electrical Maintenance Technician and Apprentice Electrician.
Zach was a brave man and a loyal friend. Those who knew him well knew he was a ready and willing ear to help process deep thoughts and big decisions, always available when a friend needed him. He doted on the people he loved and enjoyed spoiling his wife and kids with thoughtful gifts. He was also uproariously funny, bringing energy and life into every room he walked into. But his greatest joy was spending time with people he loved in the great outdoors, which meant he could often be found hunting, fishing, cycling, camping, skiing, and four-wheeling through the hills of the Hood River Valley.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Kara; children, Russell (11), and Ella (7); mother, Stephanie Serak (Andrew); brother, Taylor Eaton (Hadley) & nephew, Beckham; sister, Madison Smith (Matthew); brother, Joshua Serak; grandparents, Paul & Linda Eaton, grandpa, Jerry Dimond (JoAnne); great-grandma, Ilene Brandenburg, and many loving extended family members and friends.
Zach is preceded in death by his father, Ronnie Eaton, and grandma, Geraldine Dimond.
While Zach’s passing is a heavy loss, felt deeply by his family, friends and loved ones, we rejoice knowing that he is in the presence of the Lord and we will see him again one day. Zach’s body and mind have found eternal peace, and for that we are so grateful.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a celebration of life, which will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 6, at Shepherd of the Valley Church at 1631 8th St. in Hood River, Oregon to remember Zach and honor his family. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a memorial fund which will help alleviate financial stress for his family as they grieve.

Obituary: Martin David Owens, 44, The Dalles
Obituary: Martin David Owens, 44, The Dalles
In Loving Memory: Martin David Owens
Martin David "Dave" Owens, age 44, a resident of The Dalles, OR, passed away suddenly on April 27, 2023.
In accordance with his wishes, his ashes will lay at a favorite location in Nebraska. Dave Owens, whose heart was even bigger than his smile, delighted in making people happy with his delicious food. But the performing arts were always his greatest love. Dave was an actor, on and off stage. He was also a writer, an enthusiast of bad dad jokes, a friend to all, and “Uncle Dave” to many children in his life.
His sudden death is mourned by his parents, Dan and Elizabeth; his brother, Bill; his sister, Katherine; his nieces and nephew, Madeleine, Abigail, and Gabriel; his cousins, aunts, and uncles; and his many friends.
Dave’s sister described him best when she said, “He loved his nieces and nephew so much. They could do no wrong in his eyes. ...I think he felt that way about all of us. No judgment, no criticism, just absolute love and understanding.”
Dave did not want a funeral. While he joked about a Viking Send Off, he seriously wished for nothing more than “a big barbecue and party.” He loved making good food and feeding people. To honor Dave’s wishes, there will be a celebration of his life at 4:00 p.m., June 11, 2023, at Smoke Wring BBQ, 801 E. 2nd Street, The Dalles, OR. Everyone is invited to bring a potluck dish and some groan-worthy jokes. We’ll share good food, bad jokes, and best memories of David “Dave” Owens.
