The Columbia Gorge Women's Action Network publishes a regular "Action Alert" for progressive-minded Gorge residents. Below is the March 10 edition:
March 10, 2024
The general election campaign is (all but officially) underway ... and will be part of our lives for the next 239 days. How do you plan to stand up for democracy and justice this year? Here are a few of our ideas—we'd love to hear yours.
EVERYONE: Write letters for democracy. The good people at Swing Left Columbia Gorge are once again writing letters to get out the vote. There will be a Zoom orientation on Tuesday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m., and the first monthly in-person letter-writing party will be held on Thursday, March 21 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Crush Cider in Hood River. If you prefer to write letters on your own, email Sarah Bellinson and let her know how many you would like to write. This is a practical, proven way to boost progressive turnout and build community while you're at it—please spread the word!
WASHINGTONIANS: End overhunting of cougars and bears. Last December, the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission voted by a margin of 7 to 2 to accept a rulemaking petition from conservation groups requesting revisions of state hunting rules to end the overhunting of cougars and bears. For these revisions to take effect in time for the next hunting season, the commissioners must take action at their upcoming meeting on March 14-16. Before the meeting begins on Thursday, use this link to urge the commission to support the new rules now.
WASHINGTONIANS: Remember to turn in your primary ballot. Primary ballots must be postmarked or returned to an official ballot dropbox by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12. Find the voters' guide online here.
EVERYONE: Help bring abortion resources to the Gorge. Our local Gorge Abortion Access Collective is full of plans for 2024. If you're interested in volunteering, supporting, or just staying updated, get on the GAAC email list and check out existing resources here.
Thanks to all who contributed to this alert, and to all of you for your perseverance.
In solidarity,
Michelle
