We endorse the bond to build a new high school in The Dalles
To The Editor:
The Wasco County Democrats endorse the bond in November to build a new high school in The Dalles. We call on all of our fellow organizations and community partners who have not done so yet to join us in supporting the bond.
The building of a new high school is not a political issue, it is about the many ways providing a safe and secure 21st Century educational facility will benefit students and our community as a whole.
We love our old high school building and look forward to it being repurposed, bringing together the administration and facilities management under one roof, along with other community support programs, allowing the district to sell extra property and create a facilities fund to continue necessary repairs on our other schools.
We look forward to the district building a high school that will not only serve students but also provides a disaster shelter that is earthquake-resistant and suitable for an emergency staging area, such as for firefighters when we need it.
We also look forward to building a high school that welcomes all students with ADA-compliant accessibility. The way our current high school was constructed (with concrete doorways) means that it is literally impossible to widen them to accommodate wheelchairs. And with one inconvenient elevator, even students with temporary limitations (such as walking on crutches after an injury) means losing class time as they move around the building.
Join us and vote yes on the school bond this November.
