A 34-year-old The Dalles man eluded police several times in a chase that spanned about 18 miles but took just 22 minutes on Sunday night, Aug. 21 shortly after 9 p.m., according to Wasco County Sheriff and The Dalles Police logs.
A red Subaru Hatchback, suspected to be involved in a theft from Walmart in Hood River, was spotted on Interstate 84 at milepost 66, according to the Wasco County Sheriff’s log.
According to the log, the Subaru was clocked driving at speeds past 102 miles per hour.
The Subaru was driving east on Interstate 84 and authorities called for a spike strip to be placed up ahead of the Subaru, according to the log. It was placed near Exit 82 for The Dalles Discovery Center.
The vehicle hit the spike strip at about 9:16 p.m. and the Subaru then took Exit 83 at The Dalles and struck another vehicle, according to the log.
The driver of the car fled from the scene of the crash on foot. An Oregon State Police Trooper and a Sheriff’s deputy detained the suspect behind the Columbia Gorge Honda Dealership, the log states.
Albert C. Cervantes, 34, of The Dalles was taken into custody and transported to Mid-Columbia Medical Center where authorities wrote a warrant for a blood draw to check for intoxicants.
Cervantes was being held at NORCOR this afternoon on $24,000 bail. NORCOR’s charging information against him included a first-degree failure to appear, driving under the influence of intoxicants, two counts of attempting to elude a police officer, reckless driving, failure to perform the duties of a driver also known as hit and run, four counts of recklessly endangering another person, two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance and second-degree theft.
