18-Piece Big Band Brings a Night of Swing to Cascade Locks

The Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association's Jazz Collective Big Band presents "Moonlight Over the Gorge," a night of big band dance music in Cascade Locks. Bring your dancing shoes and let the horns carry you along the Columbia. The full band, backed by a full rhythm section, will play in an indoor room with space to cut a rug. Known as "the Columbia Gorge's Best Kept Secret," the Jazz Collective's set list runs from swing-era classics to Latin, shuffle, and pop-flavored charts. Dancers can expect Glenn Miller's "In the Mood" and "Little Brown Jug," Count Basie's "One O'Clock Jump," and the Latin heat of "Besame Mucho," "Brazil," and "The Girl from Ipanema." The band will also play Henry Mancini's "Theme from The Pink Panther," Jimmy Smith's "Back at the Chicken Shack," "Cold Duck Time," "That Old Black Magic," and Hank Williams' "Hey Good Lookin'." The saxophone section steps into the spotlight on "Easy to Love," and the full band digs into the Stray Cats' "Stray Cat Strut." "This is a night made for dancing, and this band is built for it," said Michael Paul, Jazz Collective Director. "Swing, shuffle, Latin, a little funk. There's something for every kind of dancer, and for anyone who just wants to sit back and feel 18 players hit a downbeat together."

Adults $15, CGOA members $10, students/youth FREE (HS & college students show ID at the door). Also, $5 tickets are available at the door for SNAP card holders through the Arts for All program.

OLIVE KLUG

Originally on a career path towards social work, Olive Klug utilizes their gifts for singing and storytelling as a means to accomplish lifelong goals of inspiring emotional catharsis and social change in their audiences. Influenced by artists from Joni Mitchell to Kimya Dawson, Olive’s unfiltered vulnerability is at the forefront of every song. Whether they’re discussing the complexities of the country’s politics or of grieving a relationship, their music conveys this sense of very outwardly figuring things out, which is what gives their music such a sense of communion. They're letting you in on the fact that they're going through it too, and they don't shy away from discussing the awkwardness.

FRAIL TALK

Formed in the foothills of Northern Colorado, Frail Talk creates a blooming universe of squiggly indie music for squiggly people. Like the kind surprise of a backyard garden, their songs spring up from the dirt with folk roots, soft pop colors, and burgeoning lyricism ready to welcome every listener with daydream-love.

Saturday, Oct. 24 (Not on Halloween!)

Doors at 5:30pm.  21+, Indoor Venue. Costumes Required!

Tickets are $20 in advance (click here,) or $25 at the door.

The Chicken $#!t Gamblers formed in 2017 when Luke Maddux (Guitar) and Neil Mangrum (Guitar), with Aaron Meader (Mandolin), met at Friends picking circles. The trio brought Jaimie Meldrum (Fiddle) and Bassist Jess Kunze (also of Countryside Ride) into the group, and the chemistry of the unit congealed. Over the next year, they honed their harmonies and sounds and pushed harder into melting bluegrass pickin’, rhythmic jams, pop culture-inspired bluegrass medleys, and smooth 3-part vocal harmonies. Longtime band friend Rory Johnson (Banjo) joined in 2019, and the group has locked into a steady rhythm of performing rowdy and explosive shows around the Pacific Northwest. Ronnie Ontiveros jumped into the Bass slot in 2022 after Jess left to pursue a Bakery/coffeeshop business in Trout Lake.
