Applications Open for the 2026 Tree Grant Program
From the City of The Dalles:
By Abigail Jara,
The Dalles, Ore., July 9, 2026 — The City of The Dalles Beautification and Tree Committee is pleased to announce the fourth year of its Residential Tree Grant Program. Applications are now open and will be accepted through August 1, 2026.
The Tree Grant Program provides support to residents within City limits to enhance their properties with carefully selected trees. These trees beautify neighborhoods while providing environmental and economic benefits, including cooling shade, improved air and soil quality, increased property values, and wildlife habitat.
Assistance is limited to two trees per property owner, subject to availability. Trees must be selected from the approved list on the application and planted in eligible locations, front yards or public right-of-way, depending on site conditions. Species are chosen for hardiness, pest resistance, and root systems that will not damage infrastructure. Watering devices and root barriers may also be requested.
Priority will be given to applications proposing tree planting:
Near schools or along walking routes to schools
Near affordable housing developments
Near senior housing
Within public rights-of-way
In areas of The Dalles with lower tree canopy coverage
Applications will be reviewed by the Beautification and Tree Committee. Before planting, recipients must call the Oregon Utility Notification Center (811) at least 48 hours in advance to have underground utilities marked.
Approved applicants will be notified by September 1, 2026. Tree distribution will take place Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Thompson Park (602 West 2nd Street). Pickup will include planting and care instructions.
The application form is available on the City’s website: TheDalles.org/TreeApplication For questions or more information, please contact Executive Assistant Abigail Jara at ajara@thedalles.gov or call (541) 296-5481 ext. 4408.
