Two injured in Dufur crash; driver cited after boulders spill onto I-84

The Dalles, Ore., July 9, 2026 — Two separate incidents in Wasco County on Wednesday resulted in injuries and criminal charges, according to the Oregon State Police daily media log.

A two-vehicle crash was reported at 2:12 p.m. on Highway 197 near milepost 14 outside Dufur. According to the Oregon State Police log, a Dodge Caravan entered the highway from a stop sign and struck a southbound Jeep Cherokee on the rear passenger side, causing the Jeep to roll multiple times before coming to rest upside down on the shoulder.

The Jeep driver was extricated and taken by ambulance to a local hospital with minor injuries. The Dodge driver was also transported by ambulance for evaluation. Both vehicles were towed. State police cited the Dodge driver for failure to obey a traffic control device and also cited the Jeep driver for driving while suspended.

Later Wednesday, at 8:37 p.m., Oregon State Police responded to a hazard on westbound Interstate 84 near milepost 85 in The Dalles after callers reported multiple boulders scattered across the roadway.

According to the state police log, the rocks spilled from a trailer being towed by a Ford F-350 after its rear gate malfunctioned. Troopers temporarily restricted traffic to the left lane while clearing the debris, and the Oregon Department of Transportation used a plow to remove smaller rocks. Police reported the driver later returned to the scene and was issued a criminal citation for reckless endangering, along with multiple traffic violation citations.
