April 21st is the last day to sumbit public input on The Lower White Salmon Coalition’s Draft Vision Plan for the lowest six miles of the White Salmon River. The plan envisions the future of conservation, restoration, and recreation on PacifiCorp's 500 plus acres that border both banks of the lower river. The area is currently owned by PacifiCorp, the utility that removed Condit Dam from the lower White Salmon River in 2011.

The Draft Vision Plan was developed over years of work from local organizations, businesses, and neighbors. The coalition behind the Draft Vision Plan is made up of a diverse range of local organizations, including the White Salmon River Alliance, the Hood River Valley Residents Committee, and Friends of the Columbia Gorge. These organizations have worked tirelessly to ensure that the plan reflects the needs and desires of the community.

The plan aims to ensure the long-term health and well-being of the lower White Salmon River ecosystem, while also allowing for a range of recreational opportunities for locals and visitors alike. Key considerations addressed in the plan include trails, river access, Old Burnt Bridge, parking, and habitat. The plan also outlines several key goals, including the restoration of riparian areas, improved access to the river for recreation, and the creation of new trails and other amenities. The plan also aims to support local businesses and the economy by promoting tourism and other sustainable economic activities.

The lower White Salmon River is an important ecological and recreational resource for the local community. The river provides habitat for several species of fish and other wildlife, including threatened and endangered species. Additionally, the river is a popular destination for kayaking, fishing, and other recreational activities.

The current version of the plan benefited from extensive public input via a survey in 2021. However, the coalition is continuing to seek feedback from the public before finalizing the plan later this Spring. A short survey seeking additional feedback will be available for interested parties until April 21.

If you would like to provide feedback on the plan, please take a few moments to complete the short survey before April 21. The Coalition will take a look at all of the feedback and then develop the final Vision Plan which should be available in 2-3 months.
