Piano Heist Cancels Tour
Darn it, just as we thought we were gonna learn more about Piano Heist this week, some major complications with getting Visas into the United States have put the Kibosh on the upcoming Piano Heist show for the Mid Columbia Concert Association scheduled for Sept. 17. Sources say the Piano Heist Duo are probably stranded in the Vancouver, B.C., region of the world. Other sources say that people could be waiting up to two years for obtaining Visas from The Office(s) That Issue Visas, and it’s unknown at this time where Piano Heist is on the waiting list.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, our first concert of the season, Piano Heist, had to cancel their PNW tour due to a US VISA backlog issue. This is an unfortunate situation for us as we were really looking forward to kicking off the season with this group. Please stay tuned as we try to come up with a quick solution however with only 2 weeks away, it is doubtful. Know that MCCCA will either reschedule them at a later date and/or bring in another artist at a later date and make sure we have five concerts this season. Real IDs required for U.S. Air Travel in 2025
On a similar note of traveling with Visas and Passports, there’s been a reminder on my desk for a few months from the Oregon DMV concerning “Be Ready to Fly,” as Airport ID requirements change May 2025 for flying within the U.S. Apparently something called a “Real ID Driver License,” or “Real ID Card,” will be required to get through Airport Security. Will Piano Heist have all the required documentation to tour by then? More information at www.Oregon.gov/realid

It’s a live Illustration and book event with John Patrick Green, author of the Investigators series on Sunday, Sept. 22, at the Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River. Aaron’s passion for the violin started at a young age, and he made his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra at just 11 years old. He later soloed with the Oregon Symphony, The Bangkok Symphony Orchestra in Thailand, and other symphony orchestras

An Author Talk featuring Robert J. Shano, will talk about his new book “Never Too Old for War,” Saturday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m., in the Hood River Library Reading Room.
About the Event
“Never Too Old For War” tells the incredible true story about an old Army foot soldier named Bob Shano, a Vietnam-era veteran and a native-born New Yorker from the Bronx, who was compelled by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to return to the ranks. But what makes this book so unique is that Shano had previously served in the Army as an Infantryman, left the military back in 1986 and, after being out of the service for 16 years, signed back up when he was 50 years old to serve alongside a new generation of Infantry soldiers, ultimately completing three combat tours — two in Iraq and one in Afghanistan — before being mandatorily retired in June 2013 at age 62. Over the course of his eleven-year enlistment, Shano braved bullets, roadside bombs, rocket and mortar attacks, and some of the harshest environmental conditions on the planet as he served alongside his fellow Infantrymen — most of whom were 30 years younger than he was. The author talk will be followed by a book signing and drawing for a free copy of the book.

INSPIRED! A show of artwork created by regional artists featuring the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area is an exhibition delves into the rich landscapes and ecosystems preserved by Friends of the Columbia Gorge. As the leading art gallery in the Columbia Gorge, 301 Gallery has pulled together a strong group of regional artists, including Paloma Ayala, Celeste Bergin, Aimee Erickson, Tony Furtado, Thomas Kitts, Bhavani Krishnan, Jen Smith-Lewis. About the Artist
"Explaining Marty O’Reilly’s music is like describing a dream. It feels familiar, but at the same time unchartered. His songs sound bluesy but not blues, folk but not folk, soulful but not soul. Marty’s voice is beautiful and unique, his lyrics stark yet lush over gritty electrified guitar, melding beautifully into genre-defying music within the vast definitions of Americana. One can hear an urgency and complexity in the songs, expressing something elemental and perhaps contradictory: love and anger, joy and pain, real and imagined. The live performance is at the core of Marty’s projects. On stage, whether accompanied by a band, or alone, he enters a trance and the music is born again as something new every night. It’s what his followers call “magic”.

About the Bands
The Quick & Easy Boys are a power-trio out of Portland, Oregon who creates their own blend of rock and roll. Imagine the Minutemen, the Police, and Band of Gypsy’s rolled into one. Formed in 2005, The Quick & Easy Boys quickly made a name for themselves in Eugene, Oregon before relocating to Portland and becoming a renown nationally touring act. Their shows are an interactive party with electrifying stage antics and profound musical moments as the trio pours out every ounce of their energy, leaving nothing behind. The band has gained the reputation for moving a crowd all-night long whether it be a big festival or a tiny watering hole.

Margo Cilker's sophomore album, “Valley of Heart’s Delight,” refers to a place she can't return: California’s Santa Clara Valley, as it was known before the orchards were paved over and became more famous for Silicon than apricots. In this 11-song follow-up to 2021's critically acclaimed “Pohorylle,” family and nature intertwine as guiding motifs, at once precious and endangered, beautiful and exhausting. Cilker and “Pohorylle” producer Sera Cahoone brought most of that record's highly-acclaimed crew (studio players for The Decemberists, Band Of Horses, and Beirut) back to the studio with additional contributions from acclaimed Northwest traditionalist Caleb Klauder. Valley of Heart's Delight, Cilker's second record on Portland, Oregon label Fluff & Gravy Records, has already racked up an impressive list of accolades and year-end picks and has paved the way for 2024’s extensive touring and festival appearances. Margo Cilker lives near the Columbia River in Goldendale, Washington with her husband, songwriter and working cowboy Forrest VanTuyl, as well as their dog and some horses.
Jess Clemons’ experience as a traveler, former island dweller, and small town girl have influenced her folksy homegrown musical style. Raised in Vermont, she attended music school in Nova Scotia where she was a side and front woman for various bands, touring around Canada in the summers. A big leap took her to Nantucket, working as a gardener & musician, rowing to and from a houseboat she called home for several years. After finding Baja in 2010 and subsequently the wind-loving community of Hood River, Jess now calls the Gorge home. Playing guitar & piano on stages around the Northwest and in Baja in the winters, she has become known for her powerhouse vocals, intimate originals and tasteful covers of folks like Patty Griffin, Brandi Carlile and Lori Mckenna, all of whom she has been compared to. Frequenting festivals, house concerts and listening room, Jess has honed her craft as a story teller, singer, and entertainer.

On August 1,1947, the tragic crash of a B-25 bomber in Washington State triggered an FBI investigation of “The Maury Island Incident” — an infamous Northwest UFO sighting, and history’s first alleged encounter with the so-called “Men in Black.”
The FBI’s records from 1947, which were sealed for decades, reveal Cold War fears, jurisdictional disputes, cover-ups, false confessions, a courageous FBI Special Agent, and the hands-on involvement of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. Relying on the FBI records, this talk exposes a Washington story that shapes our current UFO narratives, from 1950’s pulp magazines to the ubiquitous X-Files and Men in Black film franchises. Also examined: how the Northwest’s unique position in UFO history is challenged by others that assert contradictory narratives.
Steve Edmiston (he/him) is a business and entertainment lawyer with Bracepoint Law, and an indie film screenwriter and producer. Edmiston has keynoted for the Pacific Northwest History Conference, Washington State Historical Museum, McMenamins History Pubs, film festivals, conferences, and business groups. He was the screenwriter and co-producer of “The Maury Island Incident,” a short film chronicling the true story of Harold Dahl and his alleged 1947 sighting of a UFO over Puget Sound. Edmiston lives in Des Moines.

In 2016 Jeff Chilton packed his trombone and guitar onto an Amtrak train out of Ithaca, NY to move west in search of a home and a band. Three years later Jay Si Proof was born in 2019 from the funky jazz soaked dirt of Portland, OR bringing their “silly and euphoric vibe” (Portland Mercury) up and down the west coast. Described as "earth jazz alchemists" by Vortex Magazine, the band is a true DIY project with 2 self produced EPs, an album, and a performance history including the Skyview Jazz Festival, McMenamins UFO Festival, Mojo Family Fest, and the Bend Falls Fest, and the Corvallis Falls Fest.

In late 2019, Sea Caves released Across the Water and received glowing reviews and a dedicated fanbase in the Pacific Northwest. As momentum was building and they were set to embark on a West Coast tour, the pandemic brought a quick halt to their plans. During this time, as some relations frayed and others grew, Sydney Rohrs and Shiloh Halsey kept meeting at the park and writing songs, and a new album began to take shape. The result is a set of heartfelt songs colored with rich instrumentation, lush harmonies, and catchy melodies, all interwoven with Rohrs’ dreamy vocals and themes exploring the disconnection from community and family and the longing for things past and yet to be known.

The Portland based band Glitterfox has released five singles in just six months under their new record label Kill Rock Stars, with two more arriving this Spring. The band’s been growing steadily since “Drive” came out in August 2023, with their indie rock recipethat deftly balances Southern songwriting shine and nostalgia-fueled anthems.The four-piece band’s songwriters and front persons, married couple Solange Igoa andAndrea Walker, have always channeled their personal struggles as well as experiences as queer, neurodiverse individuals into their songwriting.Bassist Eric Stalker and drummer Blaine Heinonen bring a love of Americana, grunge,and dance music into the mix. Night Heron makes down tempo groovers that fall somewhere between Sade and Air. Their sophomore LP is due sometime in early 2025 but we may see some lead singles from them this summer.
Mega Cat is a disembodied multidimensional being most discernibly experienced as sound waves. It was first discovered in a basement home studio in the Central District of Seattle by audio chemists Aaron Benson (drums, percussion, guitar), Kim West (synthesizer, piano) and Ryan Devlin (bass, guitar.) Upon first encountering Mega Cat, all three researchers experienced a loss of time, body dissociation, euphoria, and ego death. Reports of holographic thought, enhanced perception, and minor instances of levitation have been widely documented from just one encounter with mega cat. Though the being doesn’t seem to use traditional language to communicate, Mega Cat transmits instrumental narratives that feel familiar to fans of 20th century science fiction, afro-beat, hip hop, and psychedelic music.
