TDHS Riverhawk Sports Notes by Billy Brost - Jan. 10

By Billy Brost

I hope each of you had a safe and happy holiday season and enjoyed time with your family and friends. With the extended downtime, lots of things have changed on our athletic calendar, as all of our teams other than skiing, were cancelled, postponed and rescheduled. Let’s delve right in and get you caught up on everything Riverhawks’ athletics!

The Week That Was:

Tuesday, January 4th:

-Boys’ basketball was scheduled to host Goldendale. Those games have been postponed, with no tentative make-up date.

-Riverhawks’ grapplers were scheduled to dual with Hood River and Ridgeview. Due to school closures in both districts, that meet will be made up this week, on Thursday, January 13th.

Wednesday, January 5th:

-All three boys’ basketball teams were scheduled to visit Hillsboro. Again, due to district school closure in D21, we cancelled those games and they will not be rescheduled.

-The ladies were scheduled to host Hillsboro, those games were also cancelled and will not be made up.

Thursday, January 6th:

TDHS Athletic Director Billy Brost

-The Riverhawk swimmers were scheduled to visit old friend Daunte Gouge at St. Helens, but due to continued closures, the Riverhawks did not compete in that meet.

-The first annual Dennis Radford Triad was originally scheduled, and due to D21 district school closures, we have rescheduled that for Wednesday, January 26th.

Friday, January 7th:

-All six basketball teams (boys and girls) were supposed to travel to Estacada for a six-pack tilt. With school closures continuing, we have rescheduled those games for Monday, January 10th.

-The wrestling team was supposed to compete in the Don York Invite, and that meet was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions in Portland Public Schools.

Saturday, January 8th:

-The lone Riverhawks’ team that avoided cancellation this past week was our ski team. The ski team went up the mountain and competed in the Kelsey Hewitt Memorial race. Results for our skiers are as follows:

Cooper Klindt posted a 1:10.41 for a combined total, finishing 8th. Grey Roetcisoender posted a 1:13.46 for a 15th place finish. Henry Perez finished 22nd overall, with a combined time of 1:15.81. Bucky Wilkonson was right behind that, finishing 26th with a time of 1:19.05. Paul Kelly came in 31st, finishing with a 1:20.49 time. Joe Codding was right on his heels, finishing 32nd by having a combined time of 1:21.74. Peyton Beeks had a first-event combined time of 1:27.82 for a 45th place finish. Raleigh Dillon came in 70th with a combined total time of 1:49.93, and rounding out the Men’s Riverhawks’ skiers, was Mattieu Poiraud with a 2:15.11 finish.

On the ladies side of the race, Lucy Booth paced the women by finishing 7th with a combined time of 1:08.99. Ella Smith came in 14th with a 1:11.71 combined time. Fiona Dunlop finished 39th with a time of 1:28.51. Kailee Klindt posted a 59th place finish with a combined time of 1:47.56. Wren Greely and Molly Proctor didn’t post finishing combined times in this race.

Please Note: The following are requirements for visitors and spectators at Estacada High School:

If guidelines are not followed you will be asked to leave and the competition can be suspended.

In order to attend EHS athletic events during the winter season, the following current OSAA guidelines will be followed.

Indoor Mask Mandate
The OHA’s indoor mask mandate remains in effect with OAR 333-019-1025 and OAR 333-019-1015 outlining the state-mandated masking requirements.

  • Students are not required to wear a mask indoors when practicing or playing a competitive sport.

  • Officials actively officiating a competitive sport that requires a high level of physical exertion by the official are not required to wear a mask (i.e., basketball and wrestling in the Winter).

  • Students not actively participating (i.e., on the sideline during an indoor or outdoor competition, etc.) are required to wear a mask.

  • Indoor spectators (5 years or older), coaches and support staff, regardless of vaccination status, are required to wear a mask in an indoor setting, except when actively eating or drinking.

  • Remember that a school, county, or facility may institute more restrictive requirements and a visiting school, and its supporters must adhere to the more restrictive measures in place from their hosting opponent.

Attending high school athletic events in support of our student-athletes is a privilege for all spectators. Our coaches, school staff, and Administration are excited about the opportunity for our student-athletes to resume playing in front of crowds that we are accustomed to having at our venues. However, the vigilance required to ensure that spectators are adhering to mandated policies has become more challenging over time.

If you are asked by a staff member to observe the mandates outlined above and/or other policies please do so respectfully and with the understanding that we are fulfilling our job responsibilities. Your prompt and courteous cooperation helps protect competition opportunities for our students.

These players are the best and brightest boys and girls from 5th grade to 8th grade.  Please come and support our local youth this weekend. Game times and locations can be found at www.tourneymachine.com.

DISTRICT POLICY REGARDING INDOOR MASK MANDATES:

During the months of August and early September, we saw a rapid increase of COVID-19 cases both locally and nationally.  At that time, we chose to take a more cautious route regarding masking for athletes indoors.  We stand by this decision as all of our fall teams have been able to compete without any cancelations or closures of conference and league athletic events.

Thankfully, we are starting to see cases decrease in this area and feel we can safely operate without requiring masks for our indoor athletes.  Currently, this will affect our basketball, wrestling, and cheer teams.  Coaches and fans will still be required to mask at all indoor events.  Hopefully, we continue to see cases drop as we move into the winter athletic season.

Feel free to contact the athletic office if you have any questions.

That’s what’s coming up as we return to school in Riverhawkland! I encourage you to come out and support our student-athletes, practice social distancing, be safe, stay warm, take your time on the roads, and as always, GO RIVERHAWKS!

A.D. Brost
