The North Wasco County School District Board unanimously agreed to begin contract negotiations with Dr. Carolyn Bernal of Oxnard, Calif., to become the District 21 permanent superintendent to start on July 1, 2021.

“I am thrilled we found someone with her qualifications and experience,” Board Member Rebecca Thistlethwaite said tonight, Monday, Feb. 1. “I can tell you are a fantastic listener and hope The Dalles community welcomes you with extended arms when we can get open again.”

The Board then appointed Chair John Nelson and Board Member Jose Aparicio to conduct the contract negotiations.

“I am excited how well aligned Dr. Bernal is with our district,” Aparicio said, noting her experience with dual language immersion programs. “This is a great move for our distinct, and I am excited to extend an offer of employment tonight.”

The decision came at 6:05 p.m. after the board met in an executive session to discuss Bernal’s employment.
