Campfire Restrictions Take Effect Early on Central Oregon BLM Lands
The Dalles, Ore., May 14, 2026 — Annual campfire restrictions took effect May 13 on portions of Bureau of Land Management land across Central Oregon, including areas along the Crooked, Deschutes, John Day and White rivers, as well as BLM-administered lands surrounding Lake Billy Chinook and Lake Simtustus.
The restrictions come earlier than in previous years due to dry seasonal conditions and increasing wildfire concerns, according to the BLM Prineville District.
“Protecting the safety of the public and employees is always our top priority,” said Kyle Hensley, acting district manager for the Prineville District. “Central Oregon is a popular place for outdoor recreation, especially around rivers and waterways in the summer. Campfire restrictions are being implemented earlier than in previous years in response to current seasonal conditions.”
Under the restrictions, campfires, charcoal fires and all other open flames are prohibited in affected areas. The closure also bans portable propane campfires and wood pellet-burning devices.
Commercially manufactured lanterns and metal camp stoves used for cooking are still allowed if fueled by bottled propane or liquid fuel and operated responsibly. Smoking is prohibited except inside vehicles or while on the water.
The restrictions will remain in effect through Oct. 15, 2026.
Violating the closure order may result in penalties of up to $1,000 in fines, up to 12 months imprisonment, or both.
The BLM said the restrictions are being coordinated with the newly established U.S. Wildland Fire Service and other federal agencies through the Central Oregon Fire Management Service. Visitors may see increased interagency patrols and fire-prevention enforcement efforts throughout the region.
Officials urged residents and recreationists to follow the restrictions to help prevent wildfires and protect communities, infrastructure and public lands during the fire season.
More information, including maps and closure details, is available through the Oregon-Washington Bureau of Land Management fire restrictions page or the Central Oregon Fire Information website. The Prineville District BLM office can also be reached at (541) 416-6700.
