Bremik Construction continued to hammer away at two new Columbia Gorge Community College buildings this morning, Thursday, Nov. 12.

It is the largest project the College has taken on since the construction of the Indian Creek Campus in Hood River and a reorganization of The Dalles Campus that occurred 10 years ago.

This morning, walls were being built on the polished concrete floor of the 20,000 square-foot Skill Center. A crane will be brought in at a later date to erect them on the site. In addition, trusses were also delivered this morning, and those will be put in place with the crane as well.

The Skills Center will provide a state-of-the-art metal fabrication program and training in construction and other trades. Local companies looking for specific trade skills are expected to direct the curriculum to build a compatible workforce.

The College is also tackling the problem of housing for students. Bremik is constructing a 56-bed dormitory just below the Skill Center. The residential hall will provide affordable, long-term housing for students throughout our region.

Both buildings will open by fall term 2021.

The skills center and student housing buildings are being built on CGCC property just west of the Fort Dalles Readiness Center, 402 E. Scenic Drive.

MONEY

The college has the reins on $14.6 million to bring the project to fruition. The state legislator tipped in $7.3 million when Wasco County and The City of The Dalles agreed to match that amount raised through enterprise zone funds paid by Google in The Port of The Dalles. No bond measure was required.

Bremik’s Peggy Martin works on a 3-D modal of the building construction - the program allows for Bremik to know where every nail and screw is going to go before anyone lifts a tool. Senior Project Superintendent Jeremy Symolon said the program is capable of finding design errors way ahead of time - pointing out that it can quickly show if two different utilities may be in conflict - such as a pipe running into a light fixture.
