Luke Johns hoists some lunkers during a recent bass tournament staged out of The Dalles.

From The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce with embellishments by Tom Peterson:

From May 13th through the 21st anglers from the Wild West Bass Trail and Apex Pro Tour fished two multi-day tournaments on the Columbia River between Arlington and The Dalles.

Events included a professional tournament as well as locals being paired with pros to see who could stretch the test.

In the first event, 10en anglers qualified for the Spartan 580 bass tournament. These anglers reported catching 60 to 100 smallmouth bass a day on the  Columbia River in The Dalles and Bonneville pools near The Dalles. The overall winner of the event was Luke Johns, a 22-year-old angler from Folsom, California who brought in the five-fish limit of smallmouth for the final day of the Spartan 580 that weighed more than 18 pounds.

From goldcountrymedia.com:

Johns, a 2017 graduate of Vista del Lago, was excited to participate in the invitational-only tournament, held in the memory of Aaron Martens, a pro fisherman from Alabama who won three Angler of the Year titles and three Bass U.S. Open championships. Martens died in November after battling brain cancer for 580 days.

“Martens was a super influential bass fisherman and this tournament is invitation-only and featured the top 45 or so fisherman of the west,” Johns said. “Some of these guys could go national if they wanted to, so it was an honor to just be invited to fish in it. To win it was one of the biggest wins over my career.”

Locals Cast About

Dr. Lorelle Davies

On May 21st the pro anglers paired with local community members as they took part in a Fish with a Pro Competition. First place went to Dr. Lorelle Davies from Columbia Gorge Community College, second place went to Todd Carpenter from the Last Stop Saloon, and third place went to Deborah  Tattershall from Shilo Inn. Thank you to all the community members that joined in the fun.

Nothing like a little gold on the water - the purest time of day. Reminds me of some words bandied about on most water. Quit wishin’ and get fishin’. If you chuck a spinner, you’ll have dinner - Tom Peterson

The Dalles Chamber hosted a Community Day at The Dalles Dam Visitors Center following the Fish with a Pro Competition.

The community enjoyed fishing games, face painting, music, and food by  Lucile Begay Food Stand. Thank you to our sponsors the City of The Dalles, Explore The Dalles,  Tonkin Subaru of the Gorge, and Center Market for your investment in the community.

Footage from the APEX Bass Tournament will highlight the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center,  Bargeway Pub and Catering, and Freebridge Brewing in a future episode for the Pursuit Channel later this year.
