TD football's "Zuck" anchored Chicago Bear line in two NFL championships

The Dalles’ Jules “Zuck” Carlson won a state championship with The Dalles High School before earning two NFL Championship rings with the Chicago Bears. He earned $90 a game when he was called up by Pro Football.

Our recent story about the 1947 championship run by The Dalles High school has prompted another, perhaps, equally fascinating story.
The Dalles produced an NFL guard who has been named in the top 100 to ever play for the Chicago Bears.
Our super sleuth, Sally Fasulo, forwarded this information from Bonnie Osborne and Larry Hatch to CCC News:
Hatch said his Grandfather, Arthur Carlson who lived on Mill Creek Road, had a brother named Jules "Zuck" Carlson. And he played guard for the Chicago Bears who were the 1933 NFL Champions.

And he was no bench warmer.

Chicago Tribune writer Will Larkin in 2019 rated Zuck Carlson number 83 in the top 100 players that ever donned a jersey for the Chicago Bears.

“From 1932 to 1934 the Bears went on one of the best runs in franchise history,” Larkin wrote. “They went 20-3-7 and played for the NFL championship in all three years, winning the title in 1932 and ’33 and finishing as runners-up in 1934. The offensive line was one of those teams’ biggest strengths. Jules “Zuck” Carlson was a fixture at left guard.”

Hatch went on to say, “Jules “Zuck” Carlson was working in Burns, OR when he received a telegram from a former Oregon State teammate asking him if he was interested in playing pro football.  He said "yes" and received a contract for $90 a game.  The next year he made $100 a game.  A few superstars made $300 a game.  Jule's played pro football from 1929 until a knee injury sidelined him in 1936.  He then coached one year under "Sleepy" Glenn at the University of West Virginia.
He was a member of The Dalles football team when they won the 1923 State of Oregon Championship at Amotan Field in The Dalles on Dec 8th;  they won 6-0.   Jules returned to The Dalles in October 1973 to attend the Championship's team reunion held downtown at The Recreation.”

Here is what Wikipedia had to say about Carlson:

Jules Earnest "Zuck" Carlson (November 4, 1904 – January 21, 1986) was an American football offensive lineman who played for the Chicago Bears from 1929-1936. He played in 3 title games, winning the championship twice in 1932 and 1933.

Born in Idaho, Carlson grew up in The Dalles, Oregon and attended The Dalles High School. He played college football at Oregon State University. Along with many of his Chicago Bears teammates, he appeared in the 1934 short film Pro Football.

Following his football career, Carlson lived in Chicago and worked as a pipefitter and part-time welding instructor until his retirement in 1972. He died in Chicago in 1986.
