City of The Dalles Bans the Use of Fireworks within City Limits

The Dalles, Ore., June 14, 2024 – The City Council of The Dalles has passed Special Ordinance No. 24-601, temporarily banning the use of fireworks within city limits, effective immediately. Aligning with Wasco County’s Resolution 24-012 declaring a local state of emergency due to adverse climate conditions and banning fireworks use in the unincorporated areas of the County, along with Order #24-031 prohibiting residential burning, this measure follows the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s seasonal precipitation outlook for Eastern Oregon, which indicates below-average rainfall and above-average temperatures from June through August. These conditions significantly increase the risk of wildfires.
Violation of this ordinance is classified as a Class A civil infraction, punishable by a fine of up to $750 per use. This includes the lighting, exploding, or igniting of fireworks in any way. Commercial firework displays approved by local or state government, including the Oregon State Fire Marshal, are exempt from this restriction. The use of fireworks illegal under Oregon. law continues to be prohibited at all times.
To preserve limited public safety and water resources, and to prioritize emergency preparedness and response to maximize public welfare (including those related to extreme weather conditions), the use of all fireworks as defined by ORS 480.111 within the city’s corporate limits during this emergency is strictly prohibited.
Residents and visitors are urged to comply with the ordinance and exercise caution.
