The Dalles, Ore., July 18, 2024 — A woman from The Dalles was killed last night on Interstate 84 when an ambulance left the roadway and struck her while she was changing a tire, according to Oregon State Police.
The fatal crash occurred around 12:45 a.m. near the westbound lanes of the highway just west of Starvation Creek near milepost 54, 17 miles west of Hood River.
“It’s a terrible situation,” said OSP Lt. Jason Calloway this morning. “It’s still under investigation.”
The wrecked AMR ambulance could be seen behind the OSP offices in The Dalles this morning.
Calloway said the ambulance carrying a patient a medic and a driver was on a transport from the Tri-Cities when the crash occurred.
Calloway said it appears “fatigue” was at issue with the driver of the ambulance.
“We’ve got a 24-hour history from the driver,” Calloway said, noting they are working through the information to conclude the cause of the crash.
There was some ambient light in in the area of the incident as there is an Oregon Department of Transportation weigh station near the crash site, Calloway said.
