Fire burns through Cottonwood Canyon State Park, estimated at more than 5,000 acres

The Dalles, Ore., June 12, 2025 - The Ferry Fire burning in and near Cottonwood Canyon State park has grown from a brushfire to some 5,000 acres as heavy winds are pushing the blaze in the steep arid country filled with dry grass and sagebrush.

Cottonwood Canyon is located on the John Day River which is 15 miles south of the town of Wasco on Highway 206.

Rangers at Cottonwood Canyon State Park made the decision to evacuate the campground as a preventative safety measure.
