The Dalles, Ore., Sept.26, 2024 — The Northwest Mural Fest, sponsored by Adventist Health Columbia Gorge, continues this year with the painting & installation of our latest mural “Wasco County” set to take place the first week in October and concludes on Saturday, October 5th.

In collaboration with the Mural Fest this year, The Dalles Main Street will bring back their beloved fundraising event Main Street Uncorked with a Wine Walk throughout historic downtown The Dalles.

The unveiling of the new mural will be at 3:30 pm at the corner of 2nd and Laughlin at the parking lot of Dean Dollarhide State Farm.

The Wine Walk will begin after the mural unveiling on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 4 pm to 8 pm, and it will include a variety of local wineries and businesses offering tastings, food, and special discounts.

Participants in the wine walk can pick up their passports, wristbands, commemorative glass, and wine tote at the unveiling. Pre-sale tickets are available at Eventbrite for $30 or at the event for $40. All participants must have a wristband to take part in the Wine Walk.

Jay Wilson of Brick City Games displays a 1964 Shell Lego Truck at his store opening a year ago. Brick City is one of many businesses hosting this year’s mural fest and wine walk.

This year we have a variety of businesses hosting and wineries joining including 15 Mile Winery, Studio Fit TD, Tierra de Lobos Winery, The Workshop, Wines on 2nd, Brick City Games, Urban Paper, Freebridge Brewing, Jacob Williams Winery, The Dalles Art Center, The Pines 1852, Skookum Outfitters, Analemma Winery, & Double Strand Winery. Wine Walk participants are eligible to enter their passports to win the Pretty in Pink raffle basket sponsored by Adventist Columbia Gorge full of specialty items donated from our local shops that will be located at the Granada Theatre.

As the Mural Fest sponsor this year, Adventist Health Columbia Gorge will join the festivities with two special booths to kick off October as Breast Health Awareness Month. At the Mural Fest & Wine Walk check-in site, the Adventist team will be handing out educational materials, pink giveaways, opportunities to schedule mammograms, and will offer a chance to enter the raffle for a PINK Kitchen Aid Mixer.

Down the street at the Granada Theatre, the rest of the Adventist Health team will team with Columbia Gorge Toyota & Honda and take photos for their Pretty in Pink campaign to raise funds for patient mammograms and a chance to enter another raffle for the Pink Basket full of local gifts and décor.

Walldog History

Nina Hazen from Los Angeles stretches to fill a line with blue while artists above her work on the top half of the Borg Mural in 2022 during the Walldog event in The Dalles. Hazen said she and others were trade techs who work in sign painting.

In 2022 The Dalles hosted the first Northwest Mural Fest, in collaboration with the Walldogs, a group of mural painters that has come together in different towns all over the USA since 1993 to paint historic murals. This festival was a culmination of years of community planning with residents, volunteers, the business community, historians, donors, and over 230 artists from all over the world.

The Northwest Mural Fest was an outstanding success that is now modeled in communities throughout Oregon and brings thousands of visitors to our historic downtown each year.

Alan Smith and Lise Larsen work on the Rational Reverend Thomas Condon Mural in the alley south of Sigman’s Flowers in 2022. Condon was the father of Oregon Geology and is renowned for his work in the John Day Fossil Beds. Condon found seashells on the Crooked River and fossilized remains of camels and other animals along the John Day River. Small horses resembling zebras in some aspects were also found at the Hancock Mammal Quarry. Click here for the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center in Kimberly.

We now proudly showcase 35 murals that serve as a living history and educational piece for our visitors and residents. Over the last two years, seventh-grade classrooms from the school district are given a guided tour of the murals, further connecting and enriching the learning experience for local students and volunteers.
