Goldendale XC team takes 8th at State Meet on Nov. 5
By Tegan Shermikas
On Saturday, Nov. 5, The Goldendale Timberwolves traveled to Pasco, WA to compete against Washington State’s top runners.
Mother Nature decided that a bit of wind would be necessary on the otherwise beautiful day. These athletes had to test their endurance on the 5k course while being pummeled by a fierce wind that chilled them to the bone.
This wind made tents take flight, spectators huddle together for warmth and runners push themselves past exhaustion while facing the brutal breeze head on.
The last stretch of the course had the wind directly in the runners’ faces, and not one gave pause; each runner confronted these icy gusts and triumphantly crossed the finish line.
How did the team fare? Sophomore Sean Henrikson finished first for the Timberwolves with a time of 18:02 and placed 26th overall. Following closely behind Sean was Junior Isaac Call with a time of 18:19. Junior Raymond Holycross (19:31) and Junior Hayden Connell (19:36) were the next pack members to reach the finish. Rounding out the top five Goldendale runners was Senior Elliott Grindling with a time of 19:49. Sophomore Simon Grindling (20:24) and Junior Damian Simonds (20:55) were the last of the Timberwolves to brave the unyielding wind and compete against the field of 159 runners.
The Goldendale Timberwolves Cross Country Team placed 8th and is already setting its sights on what next season will bring. There is something special about Cross Country; these young men and women push themselves through pain, adverse weather and brutal courses all while maintaining great attitudes and showing incredible fortitude.
This team brings all its pack members together in such a unique and powerful way, with the help of their amazing coaches, there is nothing that will stand in the way of the Goldendale Timberwolves XC teams.
For those out there that think their young wolves might be down for a fun albeit challenging experience, encourage them to join this OUTSTANDING team next year, they won’t be disappointed!"
