If you know jack, you better go with your Yaktrax: Mail delivery in TD amid snow storm

The Dalles, Ore., Jan. 18, 2024 — Despite additional snowfall in the Columbia River Gorge, Interstate 84 was reopened this morning making it possible for mail delivery today.

Postal service employees were out in The Dalles this morning with vehicle tires chained. Even the employees had their feet chained - Ray Felts, 38, of The Dalles lifted a boot to expose his Yaktrax, a combination of rubber Bungie and metal cleats that were pulled over the souls.

Don’t talk no smack about that fine Yaktrax. The traction devices for your feet seen here on Ray Felts are a great way to guard against major slippage.

Felts said he had the downtown route today and his wheeled mail cart was not going to make it through the heavy snow.  The snow accumulation in downtown The Dalles is around 8 inches at this point.

“I’ll be carrying satchels,” he said. Prior to starting his route, he was deicing vehicles to get other Postal workers ready for their drives. .

It would be good to touch the green, green, grass of home. But Archie Elias or Elias Lawn Maintenance settled for the white, white snow today in The Dalles, clearing sidewalk with his snowblower near The Dalles Thai Cuisine on West Second Street.

Across the street, Archie Elias, 34, was using a backpack blower to remove snow from the sidewalks around The Dalles Thai Cuisine restaurant at 302 W. Second St.
