“Wy-Kan-Ush-Pum (Salmon People)”  film plays Friday at Discovery Center

“Wy-Kan-Ush-Pum (Salmon People)” and a panel conversation takes place on Friday, April 14, at 7 p.m. at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum

Movie and Conversation at Columbia Gorge Discovery Center

A screening of the movie “Wy-Kan-Ush-Pum (Salmon People)” and a panel conversation takes place on Friday, April 14, at 7 p.m. at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum in The Dalles. This event is free and open to the public, tickets are not required.

 About the Event

Last year, ProPublica and OPB collaborated on an investigation detailing the disappearance of salmon from the Pacific Northwest. The reporting also revealed levels of toxic chemicals in Columbia River salmon that state health agencies deem unsafe when consumed at the quantities that many of the region’s 68,000-plus tribal people consume.

Over the last few decades, fish hatcheries were built to make up for the decline. Today about 80% of the salmon swimming up the Columbia River were bred in government-funded hatcheries. But those hatcheries have never — in 40 years — delivered the numbers of salmon the government promised. Poor ocean conditions have further ravaged salmon populations and the tribes’ harvests. Because of climate change, scientists project that salmon survival will decline by as much as 90% over the next 40 years.

During this public screening of “Wy-Kan-Ush-Pum (Salmon People): A Native Fishing Family’s Fight to Preserve a Way of Life,” a documentary film produced as a part of the series, attendees get a firsthand look at the plight of the salmon of the Columbia River and the Native people whose lives revolve around them. When the salmon are running up the Columbia River, Native people are there with them. They live, eat and sleep at the river. Their children grow up at the river. They catch salmon for subsistence, for ceremonies and for their living. This is the life of the Wy-Kan-Ush-Pum, the Salmon People. It is a life Columbia River tribal people have lived for generations and have fought for decades to protect.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the individuals who helped bring this film to life. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the screening will begin at 7:30 p.m. Please note that seating is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Appetizers will be served for the first arrivals. Parking is available onsite. Need an accommodation to make our event more accessible? Email events@propublica.org

About the Show

After centuries of neglect by the classical music establishment, composers from underrepresented, marginalized groups are finally gaining recognition, respect and, most importantly, performances. The Voci Community Choir is thrilled to join this exciting movement with concerts called “Music From the Margins.”

Directed by Corin Parker, the programs explore both historical and recent music by female, Black, Native American and other often undervalued groups. For example, the concert includes a selection by Vicente Lusitano, one of the earliest Black published composers from the European Renaissance. Native American composer and rock musician Valerie Naranjo is represented by a traditional chant, arranged by PSU composer and conductor Ethan Sperry.

About the Show

The Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association is proud to present the musical sensation “Little Shop of Horrors,” directed by Joe Garoutte, with music directed by Dan Kenealy. Based on a cult sci-fi film from 1960, this “strange and unusual” musical is filled with fun and unforgettable tunes.

“Little Shop of Horrors” tells the story of Seymour, a down-on-his-luck florist, who raises a mysterious, possibly extraterrestrial, blood-thirsty plant that promises him fame, fortune and love…but at a cost. With infectious music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman, this beloved musical is sure to entertain audiences of all ages. The musical was made into a smash hit movie in 1986, directed by Frank Oz, with a cameo by Steve Martin as a sadistic dentist. A staple of school, community and professional theaters, “Little Shop of Horrors” was recently revived off Broadway, starring “Hamilton’s” Jonathan Groff.

Joe Garoutte and Dan Kenealy, the directorial team that brought you last year’s sold-out production of RENT, guide the talented cast of actors as they bring this dark comedy to life in a whole new way. The show promises to be a feast for the eyes and ears, filled with powerful vocals and a catchy pop score. While there’s more than a nod to the dark warnings that lie within, there’s also plenty of laughs to lull you just enough to become plant food if you’re not careful.

Cherry Fest returns to The Dalles April 21-23 promoting a theme of “Homegrown Happiness.” Featuring a parade, live music, classic car shows and more, the 42nd annual Northwest Cherry Festival features memorable events for locals and visitors.

About the Festival

Head to The Dalles for the 42nd Northwest Cherry Festival. A longtime favorite among locals and visitors alike, the festival is set in the spectacular Columbia River Gorge and showcases The Dalles’ deep agricultural heritage and Western roots. The Cherry Festival has grown in attendance, outdoor market, family-friendly activities, FUN, and 2023 is going to be even better! “This is a celebration of the blossoms, which have always been an indication of the harvest to come,” said The Dalles Chamber of Commerce President Lisa Farquharson. “We are super excited, as we are the largest per capita, sweet cherry producer, here in The Dalles, Oregon.”

This year’s theme is “Homegrown Happiness”. Think back to a simpler time when family, friends, and home were the cornerstones of our lives. "Homegrown Happiness" can mean something different for everyone. Think sock hops, rock n' roll, poodle skirts, and leather jackets. We cannot wait to see how the community embraces this theme!

The festival includes the Gorge’s largest parade, the KODL classic car show, the great Cherry Trail, and lots of local music and bands with Little Music City in The Dalles. You don’t want to miss the crowning of Cherry Festival Royalty, including our Little Royals, at Mid-Columbia Senior Center’s Breakfast Saturday Morning before the parade.

The Dalles is one of Oregon’s great escapes, just beginning to be explored. This historic town sits at the eastern entrance of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, just 75 miles east of Portland. With 300 days of sun a year and fantastic recreational and cultural opportunities, it’s a wonderland for cyclists, hikers, river rafters, wildflower fanatics, fishers, art lovers, history buffs, and wine aficionados.
