As a way to promote healthy living and possibly reduce mental health challenges like stress and depression, the Sherman County Prevention Coordinator, OSU Sherman County Extension, and Greater Oregon Behavioral Health Inc (GOBHI) recently offered a free class at the Sherman County Senior Center. Titled “Living Well: Take Charge of Your Life”, this 6-week program is an evidence-based, scientifically-designed health self-management course.

Living Well: Take Charge of Your Health was held September-October 2023 at the Sherman County Senior Center. The class was held on Tuesday mornings from 10:30 a.m. to noon. There were two to four participants, plus the three instructors, at each of the six classes. Although a small group, at the final classes all agreed a smaller group worked well, as it encouraged more sharing and comradery among the participants. Participants completed the six-week course, receiving a free course book provided by the Community Action Program of East Central Oregon (CAPECO) and a graduation certificate.

One participant sent a wonderful testimony letter to the course developer, the Self-Management Resource Center. Some of the kudos she had for the class included:

“This class has been a very helpful part of my plan to take a proactive approach to my physical and mental health”

'“I have learned some self-management tools to help with problem-solving and action planning that will work well with my goal to be proactive and as healthy as I can be in the years ahead”

“This class has provided me with some tools and information to help me”

“Thank you to all the teachers and the entities that provided this course. I will use the skills I have learned in my life going forward.”
