Police are still searching for a 23-year-old local man after he reportedly led a Wasco County Deputy on a chase to a mile outside of Shaniko on Saturday morning, Nov. 13., where police report he fired on the deputy.
Logan Cantwell is still at large and believed to be in the Mid-Columbia region, according to Oregon State Police Lieutenant Les Kipper. "
Kipper said they are looking on both sides of the Columbia River to locate Cantwell.
The deputy was fired upon a mile west of Shaniko near the intersection of Bakeoven Road and Highway 97 after several miles of pursuit on Bakeoven road at around 8:45 a.m.
Highway 97 was shut down for several hours while officers from multiple law enforcement agencies collected evidence and documented the scene.
Cantwell was able to escape, and authorities believe that he fled to The Dalles.
On Saturday morning around 10:30 a.m., a special tactics and weapons team or SWAT vehicle was seen driving east on Interstate 84 toward The Dalles. Several other police vehicles with full lights followed suit thereafter.
Witnesses said they watched as a SWAT team entered a residence on Honey Dew and West Eighth streets in the Dalles at 12:25 p.m. on Saturday.
However, Cantwell was not arrested.
The group of officers later reconvened at Columbia Cinema, 2727 West Seventh St., and local citizens even purchased the team pizza.
Police are still looking for 23-year-old Logan Cantwell. He may also be going by different names, including Logan Taylor or Kendall Myers, according to the City of The Dalles Police Department.
Oregon State Police is the lead investigator in the shooting near Shaniko.
Kipper said Cantwell should be considered armed and dangerous. He should not be approached.
Anyone with information regarding Cantwell's location should immediately call 911 and report it. The Oregon State Police dispatch can also be reached at 800-442-0776 with a reference to case #SP21319426.
