Morgan, Wolf Cleaning up again; Funny vesters fill some big bags

Denis Morgan had some nice technique on Saturday, May 13, as he bent his knees like a golf pro putting on the 18th to get after this piece of litter during the 2nd-Saturday Clean. He made it a pick in one. But that opening in that bag is a whole lot bigger than a cup.

Have you seen them?

They wear a lot of chartreuse and they have long handles with thumbs.

They’re pretty cool, and they’re keeping it clean.

Some 25 took to the streets of The Dalles today, Saturday, May 13, as The Dalles Beautification Committee and Columbia Gorge Toyota and Honda put on their 2nd Saturday clean-up.

The Beautification Committee’s Connie Krummrich said they had volunteers from The Dalles UCC Congregational Church and a couple of real estate offices, including John L. Scott and Copperwest.

CCCNews caught up with Wally Wolf - our former landlord - near The Dalles Post office with his family that came from Corbett to pitch in. Er, I mean, pick up.

His daughter Mindy LaFramboise and her 14-year-old son Mead were corralling the windswept flotsam and jetsam of Second Street.

Mead LaFramboise, 14, his Grandpa Wally Wolf and his daughter Mindy LaFramboise made quick work of that litter blown into the edges of The Dalles Post Office.

And then out of nowhere, that wily Denis Morgan appeared snatching some goodies from under a bush.

“Here take our photo,” Morgan said. “I always forget to get a photo.”

We took it.

Wolf and Morgan. Wolf can save your dog and Morgan can find a buyer if you want to sell it.

We also got a good couple of candids for this story.

Morgan said it was a great turnout for today’s event as multiple high school seniors looking to fulfill their community hours for graduation got sticking and picking. Warm temps stirred up volunteers like bees under a cherry tree.

The combination of the Beautification Committee and Columbia Gorge Toyota and Honda have made this philanthropic quest a true success over the past few years. The program is in its third year and events are scheduled through September. In total, more than 500 people have turned out thus far.

Volunteers meet on the 2nd Saturday of every month at Thompson Park next to The Dalles Aquatic Center on West Second at 10 a.m. Gloves and bags are supplied. You bring a keen eye for that errant plastic bottle or Hershey wrapper. If this was fishing, you would limit out in 15 minutes.

Everyone is welcome.

Columbia Gorge Toyota and Honda pick up the filled bags - usually 20 to 30 per event - and The Dalles Disposal takes them at no cost.
