NWPRD Plants More Trees at Sorosis Park

NWPRD Plants More Trees at Sorosis Park

By Joshuah Albert

The Dalles, Ore. June 27, 2024 – In a continued effort to restore Sorosis Park’s Northern Wasco County Parks and Recreation District (NWPRD) on collaboration with Alpenglow has planted 25 new trees at Sorosis Park.

This second phase of plantings is meant to help restore tree cover following the loss of approximately 125 pine trees that had to be cut down due to pine beetles.

Alpenglow, a local landscaping company, that installed Sorosis Park’s new irrigation system during phase 1 of the restoration project was the contractor that planted the new trees in the park.

The main area of replanting was on the park's North side along Scenic drive.

"We did on this side of the pathway. So, along the street over there, along the street over there, that was all already irrigated and ready for trees. This is just a separate phase of the original project,” said Dan Lockwood, owner of Alpenglow. explained.

Lockwood also shared his optimism about the park's future, saying that in three years or so the trees will become more established and start growing at a faster rate.

"I'm excited to get more trees in for sure. It will take a while for the trees to look like they did, but you’ve got to start from somewhere. Every little bit helps make it look a little nicer. Give it a few years to take off; it takes a good three years to get these things established out here.” said Lockwood.

Varieties planted included: Incense Cedar, Sequoias, Autumn Blaze Maple, and Oregon White Oak.

As Sorosis Park continues its recovery, NWPRD has assured the community that it remains committed to maintaining the park and ensuring it remains a cherished green space for future generations.
