Semi-Truck Collision Closes Hood River-White Salmon Bridge
By Joshuah Albert
Hood River, Ore., June 27, 2024 – A semi-truck crashed on the Hood River-White Salmon Interstate Bridge this morning, Thursday, June 27, 2024, closing the bridge until further notice. The incident occurred when a semi-truck, pulling an excavator on a flatbed, failed to lower the excavator's arm sufficiently. As the truck crossed the bridge, the excavator's arm struck the span lifts, causing severe damage.
Span lifts are movable sections of the bridge that can be raised or lowered to allow for the passage of tall vessels. According to Kevin Greenwood, the Port of Hood River, the estimated damage to the span lifts is between 50% and 90%.
Engineers will have a clearer idea of the damage following a thorough inspection.
After passing the toll booth, a Port of Hood River worker located the semi-truck approximately two blocks away. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries resulting from the incident.
There is no estimated reopening date at this time.
The Port of Hood River has issued the following statement:
"**IMPORTANT NOTICE: BRIDGE CLOSURE DUE TO COLLISION**
