Jennifer Batten plays United Way Benefit July 15

Renown Rock Guitarist Jennifer Batten and her band Full Steam plays the United Way of the Columbia Gorge auction fundraising event on Friday, July 15. The event will be held at Bargeway Pub in The Dalles and advance tickets are $25. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the live auction happens at band intermission. Maupin Madness Poker Run & Rally June 11

Organizers say the Maupin Madness Poker Run and Rally on Saturday June 11 will feature three tarmac routes and one off-road route, suitable for all ADV bikes. “There will be High and Low hand winners, raffles, bands, vendors with whiskey tasting, food, beer and apparel; a bike show and courtesy of Cascade Moto an off-road course at the Imperial River Co. to hone your skills.”  Meet at Deschutes River Adventures, 602 Deschutes Avenue Maupin for maps and more information.

Speakeasy, Alder, and a Sold-Out Spill show at Ruins

It’s a busy week at The Ruins in Hood River, with the Gorge Speakeasy Storytelling event returning on Wednesday, June 1, starting at 6:30 p.m. On Thursday, June 2, Megan Alder & The Woods play “Locals Thursday” starting at 6 p.m.; and on Friday, June 3, Idaho Indie-Rock band Built to Spill (pictured) plays a Sold Out Show. If you keep your eyes open, you just might come across a random Built to Spill CD in your travels, just like I did last week. The band’s 2006 release “You in Reverse” lives up to the Indie Rock name - in fact a lot of it sounds like early Neil Young Crazy Horse efforts. Maybe I can camp out behind the back fence and soak up some sound.

County Line in Mosier June 3

Gorge-based Americana specialists County Line will be at ‘Mosier’s Mo Co for a patio show’ (‘ wow, that Really Rhymes’) on Friday, June 3, starting at 6 p.m.  

Darcelle XV returns to Route 30 June 20

Drag-Queen Performers from World Famous Darcelle's in Portland will be back on the stage at Route 30 in the Dalles, on Monday, June 20. Two shows are scheduled, starting at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Tickets ($30) will go on sale Wednesday, June 1, available only in person at Route 30 Bottles and Brew in The Dalles. 

The Whags, more at River City

Northwest Outlaw Stomp-grass outfit The Standing returns to Hood River’s River City Saloon on Friday, June 10, starting at 8:30 p.m.

Seattle’s The Whags brings “groove-driven psychedelic funk and harmony-laden sunshine Americana'' to Hood River’s River City Saloon on Friday, June 17. Since 2017, The Whags have released singles “Fraction Of,” “Everything’s the Same,” “Slice of Pie,” and “Eugene.”

‘In a Landscape’ returns June 30

Taking music to New Scenic Levels, In a Landscape-Classical Music in the Wild returns to venues in Oregon including a stop in Maupin on Thursday, June 30, starting at 6:30 p.m. Founding musician Hunter Noack “replaces the traditional concert hall…..by bringing a 9-foot Steinway grand piano on a flatbed trailer to National Parks, urban greenspaces, working ranches, farms, and historical sites for classical music concerts that connect people with each landscape. To meet the acoustical challenges of performing in the wild, music is transmitted to concert-goers via wireless headphones.” General Admission tickets are $35, but a limited number of free “Good Neighbor Tickets” are available at the Maupin Chamber of Commerce.

‘The Fly’ at Granada Theater

The Granada Theater in The Dalles presents the 1958 sci-fi horror film “The Fly,” with Vincent Price and an all-star cast. “Flies, molecular transformers, scientists and timing come together in this film classic that began a series of fly movies.” Showing Friday and Saturday, June 3-4. Doors open 5:30 p.m., movie at 6 p.m. Free Popcorn when you dress in theme for the movie!

Rogerio Boccato Quarteto in The Dalles June 9

It’s Latin Jazz and more with the Rogerio Boccato Quarteto coming to St. Peter’s Landmark Church in The Dalles on Thursday, June 9. A special music workshop will be held at 6:30 p.m.; the concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door. The show features special guest James Edmund Greeley on flute, from the Warm Springs Reservation

About the Artist

Brazilian percussionist and educator Rogério Boccato plays/recorded in projects led by some of today’s leading jazz artists, among them Maria Schneider, John Patitucci, Fred Hersch, Brian Blade, Kurt Elling, Danilo Perez, Renee Rosnes, and many others. He has also collaborated with top-ranking Brazilian artists, such as Toninho Horta, Moacir Santos, Zé Renato and Vinicius Cantuária. He is featured on three Grammy-award winning albums: Kurt Elling & Danilo Perez‘s “Secrets Are The Best Stories“, “The Thompson Fields”, with the Maria Schneider Orchestra, and on Billy Childs’  “Rebirth”. He is also featured on multiple Grammy-nominated albums, among them: Kenny Garrett’s “Beyond The Wall”, John Patitucci‘s “Remembrance“ (alongside Joe Lovano and Brian Blade), and on Alan Ferber’s “Jigsaw“. As a longtime member of the “Orquestra Jazz Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo”, Rogério Boccato has played with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Hermeto Pascoal, Milton Nascimento, Egberto Gismonti, João Bosco, Joe Zawinul, among many others.

Jazz Collective at Jackson Park June 11

Join the Jazz Collective Big Band for a night of swing under the stars, Saturday, June 11. This free concert begins at 7 p.m. in Jackson Park, in Hood River, with special opening act The Dalles High School Jazz Ensemble. 

About the Concert

What could be sweeter than a summer night in the Park, good food and great music? 

The Jazz Collective has earned a solid reputation for playing tuneful jazz that’s not just great to listen to, but to dance to as well. The June 11 event will feature a portable dance floor for anyone who wants to practice their swing dance moves.

Jazz Collective director Michael Paul says that the set list includes a lineup of fan favorites, including music by Maynard Ferguson, Gordon Goodwin, Thad Jones and many others. Made up of 18 outstanding local musicians and music educators, the Jazz Collective has been bringing high quality jazz to the Gorge for nearly 10 years.

Opening for the Jazz Collective is The Dalles High School Jazz Band, directed by Mic Kelly. The Dalles HS Jazz Band will kick off the evening a little before 7 PM, so come early.

Specially added for the concert is a food truck from Mary’s Cocina. We suggest making an evening of it. Have a picnic, enjoy the food, bring a beverage and dance to the music…or just listen.

‘Screen to Stage’ Sinfonietta show June 25

Coming up on Saturday, June 25, the Gorge Sinfonietta presents from Screen to Stage, a free concert of music from movies and video games including ET, Star Wars, Encanto, Harry Potter and Wonder Woman. Kids or adults dressed as their favorite character or superhero get a free kazoo and a chance to perform on stage with the orchestra. The concert begins at 7 p.m. in Jackson Park in Hood River.

Hoodoo Johnson at 64 Taphouse June 15

On Wednesday, June 15, 64 Taphouse in Hood River welcomes music master Hoodoo Johnson, expect classic rock, blues and more. Show starts at 7 p.m.

Johnny Young at TD Eagles June 18

It’s Classic and Modern Country - think swing, 2-step, waltz, line dance, etc, with country artist Johnny Young, coming to The Dalles Eagles on Saturday, June 18, at 7 p.m. Members and guests are welcome.

White Salmon Spring Festival June 4

Celebrate Spring on Saturday, June 4 at White Salmon’s Rheingarten Park, an all-day festival with a Kid’s Play Zone, Pancake Breakfast, Parade (11 a.m.), Ritchie the Reptile Man, Beer Garden and more. Live music includes the Big River Blues Band (1:30-4 p.m.); Bootleg Barney and the Strays (5-6:30 p.m.) and The Rock Doctors (7:30-11 p.m.)

‘We Were There’ show with Chamber Orchestra June 11

A concert featuring the Portland Chamber Orchestra with a special presentation of “Celilo Falls: We Were There,’ is scheduled for Saturday, June 11, at 2 p.m. at the Granada Theatre in The Dalles. A “multimedia history of Celilo Falls,” the show features storyteller Ed Edmo (pictured), photography from Joe Cantrell, and a musical score by Nancy Ives. Yaacov Bergman conducts.
