Celebrating the Diversity of the Columbia Gorge Through Art

Where I Came From

January 22-March 1

Please Join us Thursday, Jan. 23, from 5-7 p.m. to experience the rich diversity of our community expressed through art. Enjoy drinks, snacks and live music by local musician Victor Johnson. Meet the artists and celebrate a new year of local art with TDAC!

Where I Came From

Were you raised on a farm in the Dufur Valley? Maybe you left a childhood in the city for a more rural lifestyle? Did you grow up fishing on the Klickitat? Did your grandparents come from Samoa and pass down their traditions?

Heritage and art go hand in hand, and the diverse heritage of the people in the Columbia Gorge community is what makes it so beautiful. We look forward to seeing the different ways that the artists of our community express their cultural and personal history through different mediums and interpretations.

About the band

Mother Hips

"Based in Northern California, the Mother Hips headed to New Mexico, spending time at Ghost Ranch before settling in at Jono Manson’s Kitchen Sink studio in Sante Fe for sessions in late 2021. Self-produced, When We Disappear features nine new tracks co-written by co-founders Tim Bluhm and Greg Loiacono — a collection of lit-psych rock songs Inspired by psychology and literature — as well as a raw, garagey cover of Buffy St. Marie’s 1964 addiction song “Codine.”

“Greg [Loiacono, co-founder) sent me a rough demo of this song and I thought it was promising,” says Hips co-founder Tim Bluhm of “When We Disappear.” “What he was singing was place-holder gibberish, or sounds mixed with some actual lyrics, including what would become the title. I went through it and matched words to his sounds and then tweaked the words to tell a kind of impressionistic history of our adventures together. In this way, I believe both Greg’s and my own subconscious worlds revealed themselves. The music is simple and loose, helping with the devil-may-care attitude of the singing.”

Hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “one of the Bay Area’s most beloved live outfits,” The Mother Hips’ headline and festival performances have become the stuff of legend, finding them sharing stages with everyone from Johnny Cash and Wilco to Lucinda Williams and The Black Crowes. Rolling Stone called the band “divinely inspired,” while Pitchfork praised their “rootsy mix of 70’s rock and power pop,” and The New Yorker lauded their ability to “sing it sweet and play it dirty.”"

A History of Mountain Biking in Post Canyon with Doug Thiesies -Hood River County Forester, Gary Paasch – mountain biker & trail-builder, and Arthur Babitz – County Commissioner and mountain biker

A History of Mountain Biking in Post Canyon

About the event

“Unlike most counties in the Pacific Northwest, Hood River County managed to keep local control of its forests following the Great Depression. In the ensuing decades, timber revenue proved essential to the Hood River community. Logging funded services like public health and law enforcement (still does), and the forest offered a place for hunting and fishing – as it had done throughout human history in the Gorge. But when mountain bikers began to show up on forestland – especially in a place now known as Post Canyon – a place that was already working so hard for its local community, it was about to be asked to do even more. What did mountain bikers see in the clay soils and rolling terrain of Post Canyon? How would this local workhorse-of-a-forest change in the ensuing decades as a result, and what might its future hold? Join Gary Paasch, Arthur Babitz, and Doug Thiesies as they re-introduce us to Post Canyon and share what it took for a community, a sport, and a forest, to try and co-exist.”

Friday, Jan. 31, Lightnin’ Luke / Coleman Williams, Bluesy vocals, heartfelt lyrics, and wild fiddle, $15 Advance // $15 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 7 p.m. Show, All Ages

Lightnin’ Luke / Coleman Williams

LIGHTNIN' LUKE

Soulful, passionate, and sincere are the words used most frequently when describing Portland-raised Lightnin’ Luke. Singer, songwriter, and violinist, Luke’s bluesy vocals, heartfelt lyrics, and wild fiddle playing have made him a versatile musical force. Lightnin’ plays fiddle in the Bridge City Sinners and currently is located in Charleston, SC.

COLEMAN WILLIAMS

“Patience is a virtue." Those words are tattooed across Coleman Williams' right arm, forever reminding the alternative-country singer/songwriter of the benefits of taking one's time.

The lesson wasn't always so clear. As the great-grandson of Hank Williams Sr., grandson of Hank Williams Jr., and only son of Hank 3, Coleman spent years waging an internal battle with the expectations thrust upon him by his own lineage. He represented the fourth generation of country music's most legendary family — hence his nickname, "IV" — and the pressure to launch his own career was enormous. Although Coleman would eventually make his mark with Southern Circus — the genre-bending debut from his band, IV and the Strange Band, combining southern storytelling and country textures with 100-watt guitar amps and DIY attitude — he needed to break free first and discover his own musical approach along the way.
