The Dalles, OR. October 18, 2023 - The Mid-Columbia Fire & Rescue team is currently stationed on Third Street near Clock Tower Ales in The Dalles, collecting donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and other important causes. The event, taking place on October 18, is drawing the community's attention and support.

Amanda Borror, Director of Firefighter Partnerships, emphasized the significance of this annual fundraiser, known as "Fill the Boot." It's an opportunity for the community to come together and make a real difference in the lives of those affected by neuromuscular diseases.

While this year's event's outcome remained uncertain, early reports suggest that generous individuals are contributing at an impressive rate.

All the funds collected today will go directly to supporting local families dealing with neuromuscular diseases, encompassing a wide range of conditions, from muscular dystrophy to ALS, Duchenne, and SMA. In addition, a portion of the proceeds will be allocated to critical research and to provide children with muscular diseases the opportunity to attend a cherished summer camp.

Firefighter Day at the camp remains a highlight, bringing smiles to the faces of the children in attendance. MDA's Fill the Boot fundraiser has been instrumental in contributing to the discovery and FDA approval of seventeen new prescription drugs for individuals affected by muscular diseases since 2015, marking a significant step towards finding a cure and offering hope to affected families.

The impact extends beyond the fundraising event as the MDA continues its commitment to finding cures for diseases like Fredrich's Ataxia.

Since 1954, firefighters across the nation have been collecting funds, one dollar at a time, through the Fill the Boot program, raising crucial resources for the MDA. Muscular dystrophy encompasses over 40 neuromuscular disorders and is estimated to affect approximately 250,000 people in the United States alone.

Today's event provides an opportunity for the community to show their support and make a positive impact on the lives of those battling neuromuscular diseases.
