September is the greatest month of the year, and quite possibly the busiest

September is the greatest month of the year, and quite possibly the busiest

You just never know what your going to run into during a walk in The Dalles during September. And you never know what kind of cool new thing you will find next in The Dalles. Here are a few.

Today, Sept. 8, Jonathan Zilka, Bill Howell and John Donovan in video above were putting together some music on the porch of Shannon’s Ice Cream on Fourth Street. Nothing like Homegrown Tomatoes.

After they finished, Donovan quipped, “It was worth exactly what you paid.”

The latest imaginations of Mary and Marten Boyden have come to fruition at The Bar behind Kainos on East 2nd Street. Bartenders were a blur on First Friday. And if you want to get in through the alley door, you better bring your brain. Don’t give up.

The Historic Columbia River Highway has come to light on the back of Sawyer’s Hardware on east Fourth Street. The highway, built between 1913 and 1922, takes us on its curious and meandering ride taking in full vantage of the Gorge. It’s amazing that Walldogs recreated this within a few days from Aug. 24 to Aug. 28 during Northwest Mural Fest in The Dalles. Seems like forever ago all the way in August.

Cinders, Beverly and Laurie take a walk with Brownie this morning, Sept. 8. They said the dog’s name was Brownie with sprinkles and they left it open to interpretation. The three said they walk several days a week, and they could have not found a better one to do it than today, with lots of sun and cooler temperatures.

The Darryl Frank Trio performed at Wines on 2nd for First Friday, Sept. 2. They offered up some great music while Idiot’s Grace offered up tastings at the same time. Matt Hansel, proprietor of the wine bar is keeping it hopping.

The two Celia - Ok, crazy story here for me. This is my daughter Celia and her newfound friend Celia Hensey who was doing the tasting for Idiots Grace Winery, which is near Mosier. Hensey, who originally hails from Chi-Town or Chicago, came here on an AmeriCorps Scholarship and worked with my other daughter Emily at the Gorge Ecology Institute for a summer camp for elementary students at the Discovery Center back in 2017. Small world. Celia’s nickname was Kestrel and Emily's was Coyote.

But what is super weird - two Celias in one place. Never happens. Only in TD.

Everything within a huckleberry’s distance - The Dalles may possibly be in one of the best locations in the world for recreation, good people, spirits, art, and, of course, huckleberries within an hour of your backdoor. The picking was still good above Troutlake on Sept. 4

Lorraine Kupchin shows off the new Whiskey Bar at the Gorge Wine Library. The Library has seen a lot of work in recent months with major upgrades to the backside of the business that can be reserved for special events.
