Shannon's Trivia Winner: Barrett chinks this one with log cabin acuity

By Tom Peterson

The Dalles, Ore., Sept. 30, 2024 — There were only six of you who could strip the bark of these logs to uncover the truth to come up with this week’s trivia answer.

But everyone who answered was correct.  That’s a pretty solid score. You puzzlers were lumberjacked up!

So we cut all the names into six different logs and sent them down to The Columbia River to cascade locks.

Tanya Barret hit the log pond first making her our our Timberfest best.

Congratulations Tanya!

Shannon’s awaits you, Tanya. Shannon’s Ice Cream 318 E. Fourth Street, scooping the dream daily from noon to 9 p.m. It’s across the street from the Civic Auditorium. Look for the boneshaker out front.

“The house pictured is at 319 W 9th St. in The Dalles. My sister and her family lived just a block away for quite a few years,” said Barrett. “My nieces and I used to walk past that house frequently when heading to Allen’s market. Unsure of the date it was built.”

Barrett was not alone in mauling this question.

Marie Connell, Dale Christiansen, Mary Davis, Sofia Lutz, Denise Ellis and Boofitz also took this puzzle apart.

“The log cabin was built in 1939, the address is 319 W. 9th Street, and the original owners were the McClure family,” said Boofitz. “I used to take care of Maggie McClue years ago as a CNA.”

Right, you are Boofritz!

The log cabin has an historical sign that sits outside near the sidewalk - here is what it says:

Rustic Style Cottage, typical of the post World War I era of Veterans do-it-yourself housing.
