Shannon's Trivia Winner: Economy Grocery rings a Bell!

Shannon's Trivia Winner: Economy Grocery rings a Bell!

By Tom Peterson with photos and background from John Foley

The Dalles, Ore., Aug. 5, 2024 — There was no other way to slice it this week as answers poured in like pepperoni on a pizza.

We asked what current business occupied the space in the photo above.

And we put it in a box pipping hot with clues and cracked red pepper.

“I realized it was Dominos right after I sent the first email,” said Jody Bell. “So many clues too, lol.”

Right you are, Jody!

Oh no you didn’t! Jody Bell, welcome to the Pantheon of Shannon Winners! Come collect your $25 gift certificate for all things delicious. Shannon’s Ice Cream 318 E. Fourth Street, The Dalles, scooping the dream daily from noon to 9 p.m. It’s across the street from the Civic Auditorium. Look for the boneshaker out front.

Jody’s answer was one of 22 correct responses received this week in Shannon’s Trivia.

We put those delicious ovals of information on 22 slices of pizza and then blindfolded ourselves and ate the first 21 slices. Jody Bell was lucky number 22, and now the recipient of some great ice cream - including dairy-free and sugar-free options.

And Travis Church, well, he turned this story into a deep dish!

“Oh, Tom you gave too much away,” he wrote.

Dinty not!

“The Economy Grocery is now the Domino's on 2nd St,” Travis told us. “Dinty’s Market is next door, and it’s owned by the Stroud family. For a little extra cheese, Domino’s is owned by Dennis Poe (who also owns Hood River). The west portion of the Domino’s building used to be Tum-A-Lum cabinet and countertop before it was remodeled in 2014.”

Ram-a-jam-a-pizza-slama!

Travis took it to the next level with that answer! And John Foley pulled out the stops with this historic photo that makes his answer indisputable!

“I just want to add that I think you do really good work for the community,” Travis added.

Thanks, Travis and keep playing - the ice cream always rises to the top!

Our good Librarian Mrs. Woody also painted a few strokes about the busy hub at 804 E. Second St., The Dalles.

“The Economy Market was right where Domino's Pizza is now,” said Terrie Woodward. “It was a favorite place for the "cruise the gutters" to stop and refresh on a Friday or Saturday night. Right next to 2nd St. was The Dalles Soda Works.”

And Kathy Gay nailed it on Dinty’s. “The convenience store is Dinty’s Market run by Codie Stroud for her Dad, Jim Stroud.”

And here is a giant tip of the puzzler hat to all who got it right this week:

Terrie Daggett, boofitz, Kim Birge, Janna Hughitt, Laurie Dankers, Jody Bell, Robb Van Cleave, Alyssa Miller, Trisha Erlenbush, Anne Huteson, Bob Rhoades, Terri Wood, Denise Ellis, Travis Church, Dale Klindt, Gary Hertel, Dale Christiansen, Kathy Gay, Mary Davis, Susan Stewart, Pat Fowler and Bruce Harris.

And this just in - Sheriff Lane Magill got it right as well but missed our Aug. 4, 4:23 p.m. deadline. It just goes to prove you should never quit trying!
