Strike Two in TD: Little Art City gets another mural in less than a week

Pete McKearnan of Portland and Denae Manion of The Dalles work on some details of the latest mural to go up in downtown. “Wheat is King” is going up on the Raymond James building abutting the City Hall parking lot off Third Street.

The Dalles, Ore., Oct. 6, 2023 - Make that a double.

The Dalles just got a second mural in less than two weeks as 12 artists have been working on “Where Wheat is King” on the Raymond James Financial building abutting the city hall parking lot at 103 E. Third Street.

Lead artists are Portland Walldog sign painter Justin Reide and local artist Denae Manion.  Manion was the lead artist for the 2022 August children’s mural on Wonderworks Museum.

Artists came from all over the Northwest to add some strokes, including the citys of Bend, Boise and Beaverton. But The Dalles held its own on this one.

Painters also included Jerica Olson of The Dalles as well as our friend Jacqueline Cheung.

Local and regional volunteer painters will help to complete the mural in the limited time frame, just as the almost 300 volunteers from around the nation and around the world did during last year’s big MuralFest. The public is invited to watch the “walldogs” paint and tour the older murals located throughout downtown The Dalles.  There will be a dedication/celebration of the new mural on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 5 p.m.

Jacqueline Cheung focuses in on the fine details in the framing of this fine mural that looks at how the growing of wheat has had a huge impact on the economy of Wasco County and The Dalles and beyond.

Jerica Olson of The Dalles puts the finishing touch on the IS.
