Taking Care of Your Wellness in a Global Pandemic

COVID-19 has been a time of anxiety and frustration for so many of us here in the gorge. We want to be out on the river, hiking trails, and spending time in that lovely 100-degree weather (plus wind) with friends. We are being forced to adapt and change, which can be really difficult! With these changes, there is also opportunity. Opportunity to try new things, interact with people virtually, and take time to slow down and focus on what is important. Our health and wellness are necessary, especially during a time of crisis. What are you doing to take care of your physical and mental health?

Wellness During COVID-19

Exercising looks a little different for everyone right now. Depending on you and your loved ones’ risk level, you might have had to stay isolated for the last four months. Other folks might be easing back into physical distancing walks or jogs. Some people feel comfortable going back to their studios or gyms because protocols are being strictly followed.

You might feel restricted or frustrated with your options to stay healthy right now, but there are so many ways to take care of yourself while exercising precautions and distancing.

Get Outside

One way to protect yourself and your loved ones is to get outdoors. As we learn more about this virus, we know that it is mostly spread through air particles. Being in an open outdoor space helps cut back on shared air.

Going for a walk or run in your neighborhood or at Sorosis Park is a great option. If you are walking with a friend, make sure to keep a six-foot distance. If you are unable to distance, wear a mask! Hiking and biking trails are opening up in the gorge, and it is important to remain vigilant. Try to use trails that are not heavily trafficked, OR go at times when the trails are not as busy. When you come across another hiker, step off to the side safely so they can pass. Have a face mask that covers your nose and mouth ready for when you pass them. This small gesture is courteous when you are unable to distance in outdoor spaces. Let’s keep our beautiful gorge trails open by following these simple guidelines.

To be safe and make sure you are prepared for any ride or hike, bring the following items:

  • Plenty of water (more than you think you will need)

  • Your face mask (even if you do not think you will cross paths with anyone)

  • A map or mapping app (AllTrails or CalTopo)

  • Appropriate, comfortable shoes

  • Light layers

  • Sunscreen

  • Hand sanitizer or wipes

Virtual vs. In-Person Options

Not ready to leave home yet? There are plenty of online options to check out here in The Dalles! Group fitness classes are offered by a variety of studios and gyms. Being a part of a virtual wellness class helps bring back a sense of normalcy because you get to workout with others and see your favorite instructors.

Something as simple as YouTube can also be utilized right now. Call a friend on FaceTime or Zoom and do a YouTube dance or yoga video together to hold each other accountable.

Studios and gyms in town are opening up with safety precautions put in place. Make sure you check out the safety protocols online before you go into any facility. As a general rule, keep at least a six-foot distance; wear face coverings while moving around the facility and potentially during your exercise (this may vary based on the facility); be mindful of those around you; wash your hands and sanitize often. There are plenty of resources right here in town! What are you waiting for?

Make a Schedule

Write down one thing you will do everyday to take care of yourself. Treat it like your job, so stick to it! Setting aside 30-60 minutes a day to take care of your mind and body is essential. When we stop taking care of ourselves, other aspects of our lives start to unravel. Get a planner; set a reminder on your phone; use sticky notes, or workout with a friend for accountability.
