KIWANIS PROGRAMS: Kiwanis meetings are held every Thursday at noon at Spooky’s and visitors are welcome. This month’s events include:

— Nov. 3 City Manager Matthew Klebes addresses his new job.

— Nov. 10 is J. Scott Stephenson, The Dalles Art Center executive director.

— Nov. 11 Kiwanians line up Veterans Day Parade, 10 a.m. 8th and Webber Streets.

— Nov. 17 is Garry Estep, Serious Theater artistic director and Zion Lutheran Church organist.

— Nov. 24 Thanksgiving Day, no meeting.

— Nov. 25 Kiwanians line up Christmas Starlight Parade, 4 p.m. 8th and Cherry Heights.

Karl Vercouteren

Karl Vercouteren came to The Dalles in 1977 to become pastor of United Church of Christ Congregational. Early on he joined Cascade Singers and the Original Courthouse board, reflecting life-long interests in music and history. Since retirement in 2008 he has taken on several projects writing about local history.
